Not quite mad enough — 3 years ago
On second viewing, I was reminded of the mad genius of screen writer Charlie Kaufman, but realised there was much to dislike and be disappointed with in what I remembered to be a near-perfect film. It’s hard when you, as an audience member, find you really don’t like the main character, with whom you are supposed to be empathising with. And while the chaotic surreality of the film is incredibly original, I was left feeling its ‘kookiness’ was somewhat superficial, and that Kaufman’s brilliance was only beginning to emerge – evident, I think, in ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’.
