A story about "The Collapse of the Fact/Value Dichotomy and Other Essays" — 4 years ago
Rewarding read. Clearly argued. Can’t wait to read the Putnam/Habermas debate.
I'm currently reading 96 books, listening to 35 albums, watching 22 movies, eating and drinking 0 food items, and consuming 2 other things.

One of the greatest books on the history and philosophy of technology/applied science in the 20th century. Funny enough, I liked reading it too.
Menand is a great writer and his familiarity with literature (as an English prof) shines through. The actual history is a bit suspect, though. And Menand’s personal agenda in praise of post-modern pragmatism structures the entire book, causing him to highlight certain stories and really downplay contradictory evidence. I really liked the section on John Dewey though.
Think the title sounds boring? That’s because it is. And in this case, you can’t judge the book by the well-designed cover. If this wasn’t forced upon me, I wouldn’t read this.
Everyone needs to read this book. Then go light Dean Hamer’s “books” on fire.
This is a translation, so there are some awkward parts. That aside, this is a clear, well-argued book.
For a history book written by a journalist, this is incredibly well researched. It’s exciting and illuminating all the way through. Also, it makes you wonder why this stuff never gets talked about in school history classes.
Midwife Toad is one of those books that everyone talks about but no one has read. I was pleasantly surprised throughout. It should be reprinted.
Lindberg and Numbers deal with history rather than philosophy or theology but this is still an important book.
Interesting, but philosophically thick. Not much help for the novice. For the indoctrinated, however, an excellent look at the different positions in the Fact/Value debate.
