A story about "The Agronomist" — 4 years ago

The only documentary on Haiti I’ve ever seen and definitely worth watching. The US lurks in the background through most of the movie, now supporting now opposing the Haitian people and the radio which purports to represent them.

there’s a reason pitchfork gave this album such acclaim. tight newnewwave. every chord is needed; very little fluff.

A story about "Heavenly Intrigue: Johannes Kepler, Tycho Brahe, and the Murder Behind One of History's Greatest Scientific Discoveries" — 4 years ago

Critics say it’s not extraordinarily well written. Perhaps. But it’s dealing with a complicated topic and attempting to kick sand in the face of popular conceptions of the history of astronomy. Good writing should be a side issue. Perhaps.

A story about "The Unfit: A History of a Bad Idea" — 4 years ago

Not as good as Daniel Kevles’ 1986 In the Name of Eugenics, but still a strong and important book.

No “Rush of blood…” but grows on you. Too many sappy love songs for Gwynnie.

A story about "Science, Truth, and Democracy (Oxford Studies in the Philosophy of Science)" — 4 years ago

Kitcher is at the forefront of modern ethics in science. Probably his best work for both academic and non-academic audiences. Very readable.

A story about "The Lunar Men: Five Friends Whose Curiosity Changed the World" — 4 years ago

Excellent book. Very well written, exquisite detail, entertaining. Considering these guys are really boring, that is a real feat.

A story about "Birth of the Clinic, The: An Archaeology of Medical Perception" — 4 years ago

Foucault, even at his best, was barely comprehensible to the non-specialist in French psycho-history. This isn’t Foucault at his best.

A story about "The Archaeology of Knowledge & The Discourse on Language" — 4 years ago

Better than Birth of the Clinic. Still more psycho-history than anything else. Curiously, Foucault abandoned his “archaeology” project soon afterwards. Oh yeah, it’s not archaeology….
