A review of "Eight Below (Widescreen Edition)"

Eight Below (Widescreen Edition)

by Frank Marshall

This movie made me cry. I like movies that make me cry.

Also, it’s one of those movies that makes me wonder how anyone can dislike dogs. They’re beautiful, amazing animals.

I feel like this movie was misrepresented when it was in theaters (rated 2 stars)

Junebug

by Phil Morrison (II)

I expected a lighthearted comedy, and instead I got a slow-moving story that was actually pretty depressing. And I’m actually hesitant to call it a story <del>- there didn’t seem to be any discernable plot. It was just a bunch of little stuff that didn’t build up to much of anything. Amy Adams was, as always, fantastic, but I feel like Benjamin McKenzie was wasted on this film -</del> his role didn’t nearly do him justice as an actor.

All in all, I found myself mostly bored and ultimately disappointed.

Russell

If you make sure to appreciate the strangeness for what it is, you’ll enjoy this much more than if you expect it to be a laugh-outright comedy. And I agree with the other person who said Mark Wahlberg’s character is hilarious.

The brilliant Kate Winslet was underused, as was the equally brilliant Alan Rickman. Emma Thompson was far too old at the time to be playing the young Elinor (I know she’s supposed to be a “spinster”, but still). I just didn’t see as much of the witty intelligence for which Austen’s heroines are known.

I tried once to watch this several years ago (rated 2 stars)

Swingers (Miramax Collector's Series)

by Nicholas Goodman

and pushed rewind after about 15 minutes. This time I forced myself to sit through the whole thing, but it was tough. Jon Favreau’s character just tries too hard, Vince Vaughn was was so gaunt and emaciated-looking when this was made and it’s hard not to want to feed him a sandwich, plus how many times can you listen to Guy A call Guy B or Action C “so money”?

This is a guy movie in the way that chick flicks are chick flicks. Men see nothing wrong with going out to a bar, picking up a pair of girls and not really caring who ends up hooking up with who, as long as some hooking up happens. And in the meantime these guys are so caught up in what they think the girls WANT to hear that I spent most of the money just wanting to tell them we’re much more impressed by who you are than who you’re not.

This would’ve been one star, but I like Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston to give it an additional pity star.

Poor performances from actors who are usually much better than that, and the plot is generic and uninteresting.

That’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my life. I like Michael Cera, I like Seth Rogen, but even they couldn’t disguise the stench of this pile of crap. Jonah Hill’s character (in most things and especially this one) is repulsive in every way, and the only funny parts were when he got hurt. I so wish I hadn’t paid to rent that. Ugh.

I actually found myself enjoying this one, which is amazing since I’ve spent the past several years resenting Harry Potter and all the hype surrounding it. And having enjoyed this one so much, I’ve just gone out and rented the third and fourth movies.

That’s the good stuff. However, there were a lot of slow spots and the ending was disappointing. Not to mention that most of the “rage virus” stuff was a total rip-off of 28 Days Later. Still, it was entertaining.

It just seemed like it was trying to hard to be edgy and bizarre, and I lost interest right away.

I wish I’d given it more of a chance then, because upon having watched it in full tonight, I’ve discovered that it’s actually a really, really good movie. John Cameron Mitchell’s performance is great—equal parts feisty strength and plaintive sadness. Here is a person who’s always sat in the middle of two worlds and never fully fit into either, and you can feel Hedwig’s pain as each person she loves eventually betrays her in some way.

I thought it was really clever the way the songs told the parts of the story that weren’t shown, and the concept behind “The Origin of Love” is right on.

All in all, this is a very well-done movie. It’s too bad the always-amazing Michael Pitt was shamefully underused.

I understand why it’s supposed to be funny, but still I don’t find it to be. At all.

Better than I thought it'd be (rated 3 stars)

But then, I love a movie that shows that there are all kinds of love.

A review of "My Own Private Idaho - Criterion Collection" (rated 2 stars)

I don’t know why I bother ever watching movies on LOGO—the sound quality sucks so much you can’t make out half of what anyone is saying and they don’t close caption anything. Not to mention that it cut this movie off at exactly the 2-hour mark so I have no idea how it ended.

You know what? It doesn’t matter. Because even two hours into it I still had no idea what it was even about. Frickin’ weird movie, and not in an especially interesting way.

Why I gave up consuming "Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women"

Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women

by Elizabeth Wurtzel

I give up!

The publisher’s description of this book is misleading. What you’re expecting is something a little more essayish, and instead what you get is some seriously theory-laden gobbledegook doublespeak tripe. Ms. Wurtzel is simply regurgitating old ideas and the whole thing has a very “boo-hoo” feel to it.

It’s not about difficult women at all. It’s about history’s PERCEPTION of what difficult means. Good luck finding anything substantial amidst all this fluff and fodder. As for me, I’m bored out of my skull with trying.
