A review of "Pride & Prejudice" — 5 years ago
For an avid fan of the novel, this movie strays too far for my taste.
Characters and events were left out. The main leads were more open about expressing their feelings in the end, and at a certain point Elizabeth was just plain rude to Darcy at a ball – which probably works better in a 2000’s movie, but I couldn’t help but thinking ’that’s not at all how they’d be like’. Perhaps there is just too much material in the novel to be crammed into a movie. Maybe that’s why the BBC’s 5 hour long mini-series is so much better than this adaptation.
On the characters:
Darcy had an overly melodramatic look in his eyes the whole time, while it should have been just plain arrogant. Keira’s Elizabeth was ok though (minus the rudeness, but that’s just script), Catherine De Bourgh was great. And it certainly was very interesting to see another take on some familiar characters as Mr. Bingley and Mr. Collins, the director gave them their own interpretation which was good/refreshing to see.
