Small Gods

This is one of my all-time favorite books and it’s the book I reccomend to people who want to try reading a Pratchett novel.

Prisoner of Tehran: A Memoir

by Marina Nemat

I was most impressed with the way Marina interspersed the incredibly intense, overwhelming, and horrifying experiences she had with more easily consumed narrative.

I’m glad she told her story, I’m glad to have been lucky enough to read it, and I hope that others also take the time to listen to it.

I really did love it.

Fowl Weather

Five stars doesn’t leave enough room for nuiance. If it was a ten star system I’d rate this about an 8, because it was really good. I did more than “like it” but there needs to be room for “loved it” and “absolute favorite”. And no, four stars doesn’t equate to eight stars.

It was very humorous, but also touching. I didn’t expect to relate to Tarte so much, but I did. I don’t own 30 annimals and I won’t sacrifice my own life for the one animal I do own, but I could easily understand how they would take over my life if I let them. And this book illustrates what I would end up like, in a super scarry super hillarious super accurate manner.

I wasn't too thrilled (rated 2 stars)

Gods Behaving Badly

It seemed overly predictable, the story of Neil and Alice was pleasant, but the Gods themselves weren’t really entertaining or …anything really.

Right Behind You

by Gail Giles

I read an ARC of this on my breaks from work, and I was caught up in the story. I picked it up out of boredom and didn’t want to put it down. It was a bit predictable, and not incredibly insightful, but really thought provoking.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

by Sherman Alexie

I read this book because Sherman Alexie came to Bookshop Santa Cruz and I listened to him read parts of it out loud. It was hilarious, and I highly encourage you to go to any Author event that Alexie is at. He has a great stage presence, and he knows all about timing.

The book itself was touching, I didn’t feel like it answered any life questions for me, but it showed me a slice of life I wasn’t familiar with.
