A story about "pecans" — 5 days ago

I decided to start eating oatmeal again for breakfast.

I had gluten free oatmeal left over from my granola-making days and I had some currants and craisins. So all I needed for my favorite oatmeal was walnuts.

So I went to Walgreens, because it was on the way home, thinking walnuts are everywhere. I looked up and down all the likely aisles. No walnuts. Decided to try pecans.

Why’d I get this generic brand? 2 packs for $7 which was a lot less expensive than all the other brands. Remember I didn’t want pecans to begin with.

So I get them home and they’re tasteless. I guess a bit stale tasting if there’s any taste at all. Plus, there’s a note on the back stating that they might be cross-contaminated with wheat!! So much for my gluten-free diet.

A question I have about "peppermint tea" — 1 year ago

Is there any difference in the many brands of peppermint tea?

Often if I’m at a restaurant and I know there’s nothing special about their coffee, I order tea. Peppermint tea is my favorite.

So sunday I’m at one of my favorite breakfast spots, North End Cafe, and I order peppermint tea. The bag is a cute, predictable green with leaves around the edges.

As I usually do, I read every word on the package. Three more questions came to my mind. (1) Why does a tea shop in Connecticut get its leaves from Oregon? (2) Won’t peppermint leaves grow in Oregon? (3) Can I grow my own peppermint leaves?

When I get home and visit the Harney & Sons website I note that the tea sells above normal grocery prices yet still ends up costing less than 30 cents per bag. So another question: why does the restaurant change $1.75? My inner economist is just wondering.

If you have answers to any or all of these questions please enlighten me and add to my knowledge portfolio.

A review of "Code Name: The Cleaner" — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Do not waste your time or your $$$’s. I was expecting funny. Instead I received stupidity. The movie was trite and full of not-so-funny-the-first-time characters:
The see-a-woman-think-about-sex black man (Cedric),
a black woman named Jacuzzi, ”...you wouldn’t understand. It’s french.”,(Niecy Nash)
the wanna-be-a-rapper, no-talent-having, too-old-anyway, menial-job-having black man, (DeRay Davis)
the I-know-you-want-me-and-will-do-anything-to-have-me white woman(Nicollette Sheridan)
the super-rich-unscruplous-white-business man
the crocked FBI agents

I don’t understand why this movie was made.

Why I want to consume "think green blueberry noni nutrition bar" — 2 years ago

I was at Whole Foods looking for an alternative to the Lara Bars I frequently eat. I want some variety plus I need to eat more greens.

There’s 50+ nutrition bar options. I need gluten free so it’s simple to eliminate a lot of the choices.

The ThinkGreen Blueberry Noni wrapper touts “over 1 tbs. of power greens”. I figured I’d find out what that means later.

I don’t like the taste or the texture. It wasn’t nasty enough for me to trash it (and I have trashed $1.50+ bars before). I just wouldn’t purposely eat one again. If I were stranded and there was one in my purse I’d do it and only then.

I’ll try another flavor, since I think it’s the blueberries that are throwing me off, and report back.
