A story about "Serpent of the Nile: Women and Dance in the Arab World" — 2 years ago
awesome book.
goes into pre-monotheastic religions. i’m not sure if that’s the right word…but religions of the fertile crescent before the ages of jesus and muhammed. talks about orientalism, sa’id, and the west’s ever-distorting way of integrating what’s foreign. i hate it how the usa in the past, and still today a wee bit, lumps countries like pakistan, egypt, iraq and india into the orient. and today we do it with africa.
anyway, you should read this book if you are taking belly dancing classes. tells you what they call that high shrill that women make after they dance…read it and find out.
