it’s that time of year again. drrrgggrrroool. the white ones are the best!!

I decided to make myself a list (at listofbests) of Steely Dan-related movies and books I’d like to see/read. This went on for the obvious reason- that it is the source for the title of the song “Gaslighting Abby.”

A great song, and a great movie. I don’t usually watch old noir or classics, so it was fun to have the “excuse” to watch this because “Well, if the guys from Steely Dan like it enough, it’s probably worth it.”

I am thoroughly enjoying that list as a source for movies and books I might not have had interest in otherwise. I’m letting the dan choose for me. Whee!

After picking up the book Naked Lunch, and struggling through the first 40 pages or so (I do plan to finish, just haven’t yet), I just got to thinking “How could you ever make a movie out of this??” So I decided to rent the movie and I’m pretty glad I did. Totally not for the squeamish, am I right?! But definitely worth it if you can handle all the creepy crawlies. Hey, it’s about drug addiction! It’s going to be edgy and definitely should make you uncomfortable!!

The best part about the movie is that- even though it isn’t a direct translation of the book to film- it totally helps me understand how I should approach the book next time I open it (which will be tonight before falling asleep). I am looking forward to that.

I think they did a pretty excellent job with the film, I was honestly reeeaaally impressed.

This book is so ridiculously densely packed full of awesomeness. I can’t seem to finish it, but it doesn’t matter. Everytime I pick it up where I last left off, it’s ALWAYS the exact right place for me to be reading that day. It lines up with my life goings-on like a charm!

Okay, for at least 3 weeks now I’ve been eating a peach a day. I am totally addicted and don’t know what I’ll do when they are off-season.

If you are enough of a Dan fan to consume the entire box set, you are probably living in a similar place in your mind as I am. Because it’s hard to find people who are in said place, I like knowing in advance when I have the consumption-of-this-item in common with someone. It’s helpful.

When I first saw this movie it took me three sittings to get through the whole thing. I walked in on my parents watching the first part of it late one night during my 7th grade year of school. I had to go to bed before I had seen much of it. But I was very intrigued. The next day I tried to catch up but only got through the middle. The NEXT day I finally finished it and after that, I was changed. I can’t explain why.

I try to watch this movie with any new friends I make, so they can have a little window into my mind as they get to know me.

Usually I watch it once a year, just to keep it fresh in my spirit. It’s just one of those films. I connect with it on a very bizarre, deep level.
