After reading Julie and Julia, I am glad I decided to watch the film. Having “both” sides of the story – especially Julia Childs’s – did much to enrich the experience. Enjoyed this much more than if I had read Julie Powell’s book alone.

The Lacuna: A Novel

I’m finally done!

I love Barbara Kingsolver, but this was one tough book to get through. In fact I started the book and finished with the audiobook, as I was taking so long with the book and it was due back at the library.

Her previous books (Prodigal Summer is a personal fave) have been filled with interesting characters, sometimes unlikely situations that she’s able to make seem plausible, and energy. Lacuna’s narrator seemed pretty much passionless, frequently an observer/commentator on his on life. His stenographer Violet Brown is a bit more interesting, as were the characters of Diego Rivera and especially Frida Kahlo.

I dunno. I guess I was hoping for something more compelling. Basically it was just pretty difficult to finish this book, and sometimes even to want to …

The Nightmare Before Christmas

I had never seen this and finally watched it last night. I was surprised at how very “musical” it was! And I was glad that material that could have been morbid or scary was dealt with such a gentle hand. Tim Burton did a great job with this.
