WORTH CONSUMING!

I thought the first book in the “Dreamhouse Kings” series, “House of Dark Shadows” was fast and fun, but Book 2, “Watcher int he Woods” is even more so! It starts exciting (young David thrown into World War II) and never lets up. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way—still am! I can’t wait for book 3.

A review of "House of Dark Shadows: Dreamhouse Kings, Book #1" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Excellent! Excellent! Love this book. My son and daughter both read it (and now the second in the “Dreamhouse Kings” series, as well.

“House of Dark Shadows” starts with a bang: the kidnapping of a woman while her children try to stop the kidnapper. Then we flash 30 years later to a family moving to a new town and finding a creepy old house. The sons, 15-year-old Xander and 12-year-old David immediate suspect something’s not right about the place. Turns out there’s a hallway of doors that lead to different times in history. Xander steps through into the Colosseum, face-to-face with a gladiator. They discover that not only can they go to other times, people from other times can step into their house. By the end of the first book, Mom gets kidnapped into one of the portals, but they don’t know which one. (It’s NOT a coincidence that the opening chapter shows a different woman being taken in the same way!)

Fun stuff, with really likable characters, a healthy but not perfect family dynamic, and (most important) lots of suspense and action. My daughter just started book one and is already hooks.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read this a few months ago and liked it enough to read the author’s new novel, GERM. The characters are incredibly well developed—I cared for all of them (even, surprisingly, some of the bad guys). Fans of action, suspense, crime stories, and great writing will like it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the fastest-paced novels I’ve ever read. But, still, the characters are well-developed (the good guys are likeable, the bad guys despicable), the action is believable, and the plot is intriguing. If anything like what Robert Liparulo describes is viable—a virus that finds only SPECIFIC people, based on their DNA—the world is far scarier than I ever thought. I would have liked to have seen more of the consequences of releasing such a “weapon,” but considering the several times the graphic, gory results are described, I understand why the author limited the reader’s exposure to it. Overall, a highly satisfying read.
