Why I recommend "Feminist Methods in Social Research" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book discusses a host of feminist research methods, how they have been employed, and why they are important. I think that all anthropologists should read this book to familiarise themselves with feminist epistemological advances in qualitative data gathering.

Polemical — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Despite the main title of this book, the majority of the book does not seem to focus upon Pornography specifically but contains a general diatribe against men. I found her arguments interesting but they often lacked anything resembling evidence and she presented a very one-sided, anti-male view. There were several points in the book where she could have acknowledged and explored the damage that myths of masculinity have perpetrated upon men but chose to focus exclusively upon the damage and violence perpetrated upon women. I would have liked to have seen a more balanced argument that focused more heavily upon pornography with some more evidence. As the book stands, it is a highly polemical piece that seems to simply be a representation of Andrea Dworkin’s feelings about men. It’s interesting, but not particularly enlightening.

Tedious — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I have read and liked both Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. The blurb on the back cover of Mansfield Park made it sound like an interesting read, but I found it to be extremely tedious, full of moral rebuke and starring a heroine who is somewhat less than inspiring. I don’t recommend this book.
