A story about "Walt Disney Treasures - Mickey Mouse in Living Color, Volume Two" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It took me a long time to watch all the shorts, but I loved every moment of it. I bought this treasure at the Walt Disney exhibit in Montréal a few weeks ago, I jumped on it because since it’s a Wave 3 Treasure it was already pretty much out of stock.

I used to be not much of a Mickey-and-his-gang fan, but as I became more and more of a Disney fan and of an animation aficionado, I came to realise the greatness of his existence and how what he brought for the modern entertainement (it all began with a mouse!).

While I must admit I am not one for the visual gags and some of the shorts were a bit low on content, the greatness of the Mickey character made up for it. He is so nice, so funny, so cute! I like him much more than the almost-famouser Donald Duck. It’s also nice to be able to laugh genuinely, at innocent gags.

A great plus for me was the more recent shorts on Disc 2, way more accessible and with a very good plot. All of the bonus features were good too. It’s a really solid set, and as is the case with all the Treasures serie, the packaging is really nice, it looks great on the DVD shelf!

A story about "The Queen" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was very interested by that movie for some reason, and that interest was fueled when Helen Mirren won the Oscar for best acting. I finally bought it really cheap, used, at a local renting shop.

I really liked the movie! I can’t say I’m really interested in the royal family, I don’t care so much about gossip and stuff, but nonetheless it was really interesting to see the reality the Queen is faced with. The movie was well-done, the landscapes were beautiful and it was in general a good glance of life when you’re a royal (I guess!). I really recommend it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Where to start? This is such an amazing album! I love it so much! I can not be objective! Regina is awesome! Buy it!

Seriously, I really like it. I listened to it non-stop for like two weeks. I discovered Regina this summer when my brother was obsessed by her and we listened to her in the car while travelling in the South of France. So I bought it off amazon and was really happy to relive these memories on my first listen.

It’s not really a “sunny summer in France” album though, I think it fits more with this really great snowy winter we’re having. It’s weird, I think of this album as having two seperate parts: there are the upbeat “happy” songs, like Fidelity and On the Radio and Hotel Song that I enjoy walking in the cold to, or dancing in front of the mirror to. Then there’s the quiet part, great for studying or dozing off, with Samson (which is really my most ultimate favorite) and Lady and 20 years of snow. It’s like an all-task album. How great!

I look forward to hearing more of Regina! I asked for Soviet Kitsch at Christmas, perhaps I’ll get lucky :D

A story about "Émergences" — 2 years ago

My sister gave this compilation to me on my last birthday, I think she has friends singing on it. It’s a special CD, I am not used to listening to Christian music! It’s not too religious though, it often just talks about love and God and also stuff like environment and world peace.

I think the CD was a good idea, because when you’re a relatively unknown artist, it must feel great to make a CD, and I guess you can put it on your resume also or something like that. Of course it’s not the best ever, some songs annoy me and they all have a rather “amateur” feeling, but that’s to be expected. I hope some of them will go on in their musical aspirations!

A story about "Meet the Robinsons" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was really looking forward to this movie, mainly because it looked much better than Home on the Range and Chicken Little (though I have yet to see both of them!). So, I bought the DVD as soon as it came out and was happy to pop it in the DVD player.

I was a bit disappointed. It’s not a bad movie, it’s just that we know Disney can do so much better! The time-travelling thing is always interesting, the graphics were okay, the characters were likable enough (though I thought the villan was a bit pathetic, but that was probably the point). The story wasn’t very well-balanced though, the beginning and ending were fine but the middle streched out and my boyfriend even fell asleep (I was sleepy too!).

I really liked the “Keep moving forward” thing though. It was a very nice reference to Walt Disney. It made me hopeful for future Disney movies; it’s like they were acknowledging that currently they are not at their best, but that they won’t dwell on the past and keep trying to do their best in new movies (Rapunzel and The Frog Princess have me hopeful). Also, though the music wasn’t remarkable having Rufus Wainwright was a pleasant surprise.

The DVD in itself is fine for a single-disc. I like the slipcover, heh. The game is okay, not too childish. The making-of is really good for this type of release, it’s just enough developped (and again, yay for Rufus appearances). There’s also a little documentary about “great inventions” that was quite interesting, though it spent an abnormally large time on Walt Disney (though I love the man, I don’t think he deserves taking twice the time of Edison).

All in all, it’s an okay entertainment. I recommend renting it though, it does not have a big relisten value.

A story about "Enchanted" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I fell in love with the movie, and I just knew I had to get the soundtrack. I am something of a Disney-soundtrack collector, though I don’t have much, and I absolutely adore everything Alan Menken thouches (er, possiblement excepting Home on the Range, but let’s not go there). Also, the Menken-Schwartz pair had done Pocahontas which is one of my favorite Disney soundtracks. So well, I bought it without hesitating!

I wasn’t disappointed! All 5 songs have really high play counts on my iTunes. I watched the movie in French, so I wasn’t really sure what lyrics were going to be, but luckily I found I enjoyed So Close much better than its French translation. My favorites are That’s How You Know (of course!) and Ever Ever After, even though it is rather pop-cheesy.

I also really like the instrumental pieces. They represent the movie well and the small nods to other Menken works (the Beauty and the Beast theme is very apparent in one of the tracks) are really beautiful. My favorite is the Enchanted Suite, which brings together all the themes of the movie.

If you liked the movie, this album is really a no-brainer. It’s going to help you wait more patiently for the DVD!

WORTH CONSUMING!

Easily my favorite film of 2007. Well, because I have yet to see Atonement. Actually I liked other films too. This is a very bold statement and I am afraid of doing that. But I just need to express how much I loved this movie ;)

I am one of the ultimate Disney fans, owning many Disney DVDs and treasuring Disney animation. So, I waited for this 2D-animation comeback with feverish happiness. Needless to say, when the animated beginning, with its singing and dancing and loving and riding-in-the-sunseting, I was ecstasic.

It’s a very, very, very girly movie, there’s no denying it. Even if my boyfriend is usually not so grumpy while suffering my girly movies, I won’t even try to impose this one. Of course it’s great visually and the actors are good, but still. Anyway! I am a girl, so it’s not a problem in this case ;)

The highlight for me was the music. Oh, and Amy Adams. And McDreamy. And all the Disney references. But really, I really loved the That’s How You Know sequence. It reminded me a bit of Moulin Rouge!, with all the exuberance.

I officially can not wait for the DVD. Please girls, don’t waste any more time and go see it! :D

A story about "Ma Gonzesse" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I bought this old record at the FNAC this summer with a bunch of other low-priced CDs. I like Renaud, but not incredibly so, so I thought it was the perfect occasion to get one of his classics!

It’s a funny album, with some funny songs (Ma gonzesse, the title piece, really makes me laugh) but also some emotional ones, like the wonderful Chanson pour Pierrot, which is still a classic after all these years (the record is from 1979). Peau Aime is also a really interesting poem with many play on words.

The rest of the songs are okay, but the record in itself, apart from the gems I mentioned, is pretty forgettable. I don’t regret buying it though!

A story about "Direction" — 2 years ago

This is a glorious album for me! It’s the only one I was given during the brief period I was an animator at the local radio station. So, though I was very thankful, I didn’t listen to it for while because my fellow animators told me it was rather bad ;)

I was surprised though, it isn’t hald-bad. I didn’t appreciate it much but it didn’t make me cringe so horribly that I had to remove the CD ASAP from my CD player. So, well, if you get it for free, don’t throw it away. That is my very insightful advice.

My all consuming summary of November, 2007 — 2 years ago

November was really an all-star consomation month! I didn’t think it was possible to consume that many items during a school month. Though, I must say, the autumn break had of course a great impact on the consuming rate of the first days of November.

So! I listened to a lot of CDs, because I have this weird rule now that every 100s plays in iTunes, I should pop in a new album that has been sitting on my shelves for too long! I am not sure why, but I have a tendency to buy a lot of CDs, and then never listen to them. I am weird that way. So, lots of albums – with O_ by Damien Rice being probably the best (and a gift from my boyfriend, too!), and _Enchanted clearly being the one I listened too the most! :)

Not much reading this month. I finished Mansfield Park halfway through the month and then refrened from reading anything else because I wanted to concentrate on my school reading (what a bore!). That’s a bit sad, and I look forward to more reading on Christmas break! To compensate, I turned to video games, finishing Final Fantasy X and starting Final Fantasy X-2, which I absolutely love and played a lot.

I also saw quite a bit of movies! This was something of a Disney month, the highlight clearly being the great&wonderful Enchanted, that I loved with all my heart. I also watched lots of CGI more recent efforts – The Incredibles, Ratatouille (while eating ratatouille!) and Meet the Robinsons. I also saw a few random movies, and sadly finished The OfficeDVD collection.

Phew! A great month! I look forward to my next school break to consume some more :)
