A story about "Gilmore Girls - The Complete First Season" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Gilmore Girls is such a pleasure to watch. These girls make me feel warm, cozy and … well, they also make me miss my boyfriend very much because of all the LOVE in it. But he really doesn’t want to watch it (I don’t blame him) so I must always suffer my terrible loneliness post-Gilmore. UNTIL THE END OF TIME.

But I disgress. I knew some of my friends were in love with Gilmore Girls, and when I saw it on sale on amazon.com, I decided to give it a go. I didn’t regret it in the slightest! Every episode has left me so happy and full of laughs and longing for more. I love every single character, though my favorite is probably Lorelai (plus, she has such a pretty name). The writing is witty, the town is full of quirky people that I love and it’s just generally amazing and AH.

I am most probably going to buy the complete series in the coming days or weeks. I am actually trying to refrain from buying too much because I feel like I should play with my Christmas gifts first. But the missing is horrible! I can’t wait! ;)

A story about "The Second Summer of the Sisterhood (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read it in French last spring and thought it was the weakest of the serie (I read the first two books in French and then bought the last ones in English). My favorite character, Bridget, had a mostly boring story and none of the other stories connected with me (though Lena’s story is really heartbreaking).

But on re-read, it was like I saw this book in a whole new light (and I don’t think it really has to do with reading it in the original language, though that probably helps). The “boring Bee” storyline became my dear Bee putting ground back under her feet and really growing as a person. I despaired at Tibby being cruel and un-her (though I despair at Tibby a lot, it seems). Lena’s story was still wrenching. It’s just Carmen with whom I can’t seem to relate, but her story was still interesting.

I do still think it’s my least favorite, though, but I can really see how important a stone it is in these girls’ wall (how poetic). Girls in Pants remains my favorite, where almost every storyline got to me!

A story about "Alégracia et les Xayiris vol. 2" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s a bit hard to write an objective review of this book since its author, who happens to be my boyfriend, will probably read it. So, let’s just say I like the Alégracia books more and more as they go on (I thought the first one was a little underdevelopped, but the two-part second one is clearly better). I feel the character is really evolving, the story is woven more complexely and the style is better (though the dialogues still need a bit of work, I think). Also, the cover is just great.

A story about "Guide de La Petite Vengeance (Original French Version with English Subtitles)" — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

It’s always hard to find something to rent when I’m in Beauce in my boyfriend’s family, because his parents don’t understand english so well and I hate to watch translated movies, plus they don’t like French movies. So we settled for a Québec movie, which was made by the same people who did La grande séduction, a movie that is awesome.

So, it should be good, right? Wrong. It was incredibly boring, I didn’t like the actors and especially not the characters. We did not finish it, and we never do that, so it says it all. Please refrain from renting it!

A story about "Persuasion" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My best friend and I are very enthusiast Austen fans, but since we’re not in an English-speaking environement, we are actually fairly novice in the subject and know nothing of the lesser-known stories, like Persuasion. So we settled for the watch with absolutely no knowledge of the story, though I knew that Anne was Austen’s oldest heroine and Persuasion, her last complete novel.

Persuasion is a very different story from the cheery Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility. Anne Elliot is a (relatively) old maid, with little to look forward to in life, and that made her particularly endearing. Though the story is probably a tad too complicated for the 2-hour format, which made us wonder a some loose things a bit, it’s nice enough. The main couple is wonderful, well-played and full of (hidden) love. I thought that the young lady who jumps from the top of the wall was really stupid, though, but was amused to find myself back in the location of Mansfield Park’s Portsmouth!

No bonus feature to speak of on this very lacking DVD, but the film is fine, with a clear picture and okay sound. It’s clearly a must for Jane Austen fans. I am very much looking forward to the BBC’s new adaptations DVDs, too!

A story about "Last Unicorn (1982) (Ws Aniv Sub Dol Chk Sen)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I remember very vaguely from my childhood the first moments of this movie, taped on a VHS from the Christmas movies at a local TV station. So, when I saw the special edition had gone out, I thought it’d be a good idea to buy it, especially because I thought it was very cheap for a 2-disc DVD… as it turns out, it was cheap because it was single-disc ;)

It took me quite a long time to watch it because my usual co-watchers were totally uninterested by this movie! So it took me some willpower to pop in the DVD, on a day I had nothing better to do.

It’s a good movie, I guess. The animation is not the best, especially if you compare it with Disney, but it’s okay. The unicorn character is great, in her many shapes. Some scenes were really annoying (the damn butterfly from the beginning nearly made me stop the movie) and it’s a bit slow-paced. Also, the ending is very bittersweet, which I guess gives depth to the movie. The music is great and I liked the speaking voices too.

The bonus features are okay, even if it’s single-disc! The game was alright, and the small featurettes were interesting (though the audio-only ones were too much for me). All in all, it’s not a DVD I really recommend, but I guess it’s okay for fans or nostalgics!

A story about "Chercher le vent" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read this a while ago, like everyone from Québec with a little interest in their country’s books. It’s one of the books that you’ll hear the most when you ask for book recs, around here.

I can of course see the appeal. It’s a good story, interesting&lively style, alive characters, and a nice intricate love story to tie it up. I guess I’m just a bit blasée from this kind of on-the-road-because-my-girlfriend-dumped-me writing. I think a bit of change in the formula would do good to those few authors stuck in that genre. But then again, Stéphane Bourguignon, another author who mastered the style in his first books, tried to renew himself and I just hate the result, so maybe it’s good that it doesn’t change much ;)

Also, it’s only Vigneault’s second book. I look forward to his next efforts. I think he has a movie in the works, that’ll certainly be a nice change.

A story about "Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I am a fan of Ani DiFranco, and bought some stuff on the righteous babe store, with which came a compilation of various RBR artists, including Andrew Bird. I reallly really loved Fake Palindromes and Measuring Cups was nice too, so I thought I’d buy the album with my next RBR purchase, which I did.

I thought it was a very good album. I don’t know much about the indie scene, so I can’t say if it’s new or overused, but it’s nice to listen to, relaxing but profound at the same time, depending on how you see it.

My favorite songs are still the ones I mentionned earlier; the other ones tend to kind of blend together, which can mean that the album is a good, complete musical feeling, or also that they are forgettable. I guess I’d go with the former. I should listen to it more to get more friendly with it!

A story about "Boston 11.10.06" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The best thing about this bootleg is the fact that it’s the “baby bootleg” – I loved all the crazy talk about her pregnancy newsletter and everything. It’s also great to have more Reprieve songs, including my favorite (Half Assed) and also brand new songs! (Though I didn’t like them that much, oh well.)

It really made me look forward to the next Ani album, she says she’s trying to write more happy songs and that’s just lovely.

A story about "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children DVD (1 Disc)" — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

We wanted to rent a movie but nothing struck our fancy, so we rented The Spirits Within but ended up watching this one. I usually really like the Final Fantasy serie, though I hadn’t actually played the VII one, so I think I was expecting too much from it?

Anyway, it’s really bad. The graphics are great, sure, but there’s absolutely no story to speak of, the characters are underused and underdevelopped, and it’s really just a string of unrealistic battles. Do yourself a favor and don’t watch it…
