Probably Schmitt's best — 2 years ago
La part de l’autre is a great uchrony (an uchrony is when a single event is changed through the course of history, thus having a great impact on the rest of what we know as real history). In this case, none other than Adolf Hitler is the subject: he is accepted to the Beaux-Arts Academy. The artist Hitler becomes a much, much better person and lives a very different life.
Schmitt books often make us think, since philosophy, religion and art are some of his favorite themes. I believe this one however brings the thinking to another level since it is so complex and well done. The idea that each person contains two sides (an evil and a good one) that can be very well developed depending on that person’s choices is very interesting, and it obviously has a great impact in that book’s case. A great read – I read it all in a day, I just couldn’t put it down!
