my dad owns a h.g. wells book which contains both ‘war of the worlds’ and ‘the time machine’. i enjoyed ‘the time machine’ far more than the other, more popular story.
i haven’t given up, just taken a hiatus from reading it. it’s a lot more meaty (read: theory-heavy) than i expected.
so i’m taking time off to read fictional books for a while.
i liked the movie, so read the book.
i think i prefer the movie version because she doesn’t sleep with ray.
had to read this for year 12 english literature. it was worth reading in the context of using it as a tool to study dysopian societies, the role of women, fundamentalism, etc, but i wouldn’t have read it normally.
two of my friends had to read this for an anthropology class at uni, and i found myself wanting to read it after hearing them talk about how horrible it was.
it was better than i expected, and i’d even go so far as to say that everyone should read it.
edit:
i don’t think the above quite conveys how much i loved this book. the insight into things i’d never experienced, the tragedy of the class system, the desperate, depressing lives some people lead. it’s all so incredibly fascinating. i must read more books like this.
