A story about "In a Dry Season" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is the first Peter Robinson I read. I found it a little hard to get into at the start, and I was fascinated that different fonts were used for different periods in time (that’s the geek in me). Anyway, by the time I was half way through I was well and truly hooked, and when I reached the end, I went out and bought another one. I very much like the character of Banks. I suppose the author I would compare Peter Robinson to is Reg Hill – who is equally good.

A story about "Hell to Pay: A Novel" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

All hail Pelecanos. Every book of his I read I finish and think it’s the best thing I’ve come across in a long time. I couldn’t put this one down.

A story about "The Sunday Philosophy Club : An Isabel Dalhousie Mystery" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed this book. He has a slow, mesmeric way of writing. The reader is often taken into the side-tracking thoughts of Isabel Dalhousie, and it’s always enticing. The pace was quite measured, but I found that that was one of the reasons that I liked it so much.

A story about "I Wish Someone Were Waiting for Me Somewhere" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a great collection of short stories, which have been translated from French. The translator has done a great job. I usually don’t find myself really enjoying short stories, but this is different. Highly recommended, and the perfect size to carry in your bag.

A story about "Set in Darkness: An Inspector Rebus Novel" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is an excellent Rebus novel – dark and moody. Highly recommended.

A story about "True stories: Selected non-fiction" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I cannot recommend this more highly. It’s a great collection of stories, and I think even non-Melbourne dwellers would love it. I particularly loved all the stuff about being a kid in the 1970s – primary school – it was very similar to what I experienced. I love her style.

A story about "Sin City" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I found it interesting what other people had to say about Sin City. I think it could have been one of my all time favourite films, had the pacing and editing been snappier. Visually, it is fantastic – and of course, it has Clive Owen, who can do dark and brooding with the best of them. The violence is quite drastic – I usually can’t watch violent stuff, but this was so stylised that I found it all quite in context, and often excellently over-the-top.

A story about "Dead Ringer" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve read a few books by Lisa Scottoline, but I haven’t read them in order, which makes this one a bit weird – it’s the good old premise of ‘identical twin, adopted out at birth, returns to make trouble for her sister’ – but it’s a fun read.

A story about "Escondida" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I like this album better than Catalpa – I haven’t done any googling, so I don’t know which came first, but Escondida is lush, while being almost completely sparse. There is a LOT of space. And that’s a good thing.

A story about "Somersault: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a beautiful album. It includes a little bit of dialogue from the film on one of the tracks, which is a little offputting if you’re sitting around with people and it’s on in the background. But all in all, it’s gorgeous.
