A story about "Barefoot Boy" — 2 years ago

So I didn’t know much about Ray Barrett, and now I know a lot. I have to say that the main reason I read this in the first place was because it was co-written by Peter Corris. This fact is completely absent from the content of the whole book – even in the summing up at the end, Ray Barrett rabbits on about writing it all. Anyway. It’s a really interesting read, even though it becomes obvious that Ray Barrett is not someone you would EVER want to be married to – the surprise is not that he was married three times, but that he wasn’t married more! It’s great hearing about his days in Brisbane and Sydney radio. However, by the end of the book he just sounds like everyone’s grumpy great uncle, bemoaning the youth of today and how they don’t pronounce anything properly. A disappointing end to a decent book.

A story about "Mad Max" — 2 years ago

So I was the only one of the five people in the loungeroom a few nights ago that had not seen this film. It’s very jagged, but I have been firmly told that it is all going to be tied together in Mad Max II – so I’ve got to get around to that. I found it impossible to believe that Mel Gibson would go from this movie to the schlocky stuff he went on to do – not all schlocky, but…
It was great picking out the locations that were used – the Melbourne Uni carpark etc.

A story about "The Undertow (Cliff Hardy series)" — 2 years ago

I am a big Cliff Hardy fan, and have read pretty much every one. This isn’t one of Peter Corris’s most sparkling attempts, but if the standard of most of the others wasn’t so high, I would call it very good. It gave me the impression that it was an effort to get it written, although whether this is true or not, who knows? I still recommend it, but there are other, relatively recent books in the same series, that I have preferred. Lugarno is one of them.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is OK. Not as amazing as I had expected – I think I was hoping for a more Ian Rankin crossed with, oh, I don’t know, someone a bit more hardcore espionage-y. But this was more of a run of the mill police investigation thing. Not bad, but not brilliant. A good aeroplane read.

A story about "Loudquietloud - A Film About the Pixies" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Fabulous. I have the Pixies DVD, and I think they share a little of the same footage, but the behind-the-scene stuff in this is really what did it for me. Loved seeing Kim Deal just totally wide eyed and freaking out at the crowd reaction at their first reunion show. See it. It’s great.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Mmmmm – I like this film even more in retrospect. fox woods is right, the story is jigsaw style, and how it all comes together is poetry. and matthew macfadyen? swoon

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Completely confusing. Plot went AWOL about half way through. Keanu and Sandra Bullock had about as much chemistry as a bit of wet bread. I went to see it because I loved the premise – the idea of a magic post box. Jeeez. It just left me bewildered and wondering how it was all supposed to fit together. A shame.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Bought this on video from a sale box in our local shop – I remembered that I’d seen it at the cinema years ago and liked it, but I couldn’t remember much about. It’s a great, tongue in cheek, confidence trickster kind of film that gets less believable as it goes on, but it’s so enjoyable that I was willing to suspend my disbelief. This seems to be Kate Beckinsale before she got ‘Hollywooded’.

WORTH CONSUMING!

The more I listen to this the better it gets. I love the fact that they are bass-free three piece and can still totally cut it. Obviously they added in a few things when they were recording, but the whole thing just revolves around guitar, drums and vocals. Rock Boys has a real Johnette Napolitano feel in the vocals, while the lyrics to 19 20 20 are hysterical. Give it a listen!!

A story about "Ladder of Years" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was OK – not as good as The Accidental Tourist or When We Were Grown Ups, both of which I’ve recently read. The whole thing feels circuitous – and it’s supposed to be, but I just found the ending very disatisfying somehow. Still worth reading, but not amazing.
