excellent story about young boys being made into opera singers and the whole culture surrounding it
educational look into the world of traditional vs contemporary judaism during wwII
the story was compelling, but I found the writer’s subject matter very odd. All the characters in the book struggled with 2 themes – sex and religion (insofar as religion=Christianity). I found the characters rather 2-dimensional in that they were unable to process their feelings or growth in large doses, and in fact I found it almost condescending the way the author showed a constant struggle in ALL his characters to come to terms with feelings or events. It was as though he was saying that only trained psychologists are able to come to terms with things in a reasonable amount of time and others need to be slowly spoon fed (in small doses). I also found that the female characters in particular were displayed as the most obtuse about their own growth.
rather predictable and a tad repetitive
engaging spiritual/mystical mystery. Would definitely read Moore again. Had me guessing/wondering up until the end. Still wondering… Interesting how religion effects us even when we are not believers, or we are not brought up in a faith.
really good, original timely plot, makes you think about the state of the world since the USSR collapsed and what really has happened.
great story about coming of age, childhood friendship, family dynamics, etc. I loved the way the author portrayed the idea that kids don’t translate what their parents say; but instead take it almost quite literally. It was also a story of “minimal” child sexual abuse and the terrors that a child endures during a long-term predatory relationship.
good thriller, nothing too much that stands out – just a good ride!
