A story about "The Book of the Dead" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I picked this book up at the airport during a flight delay. It turned out to be pretty good, but I wish I’d read some of the previous books first since this book gives away some backstory that is critical to the “mystery” of the other books.

A story about "Stardust" — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

An average Hollywood movie, but I hate what they did to the story. I’m usually very forgiving about changes that need to be made to make a story fit the movie format, but they left out my favorite aspect of the story and added an unnecessary and baffling 20 minutes at the end. Plus, I felt they went a little overboard with the visual effects without capturing the magic and whimsy of the market across the wall. There were a few wonderfully funny elements to the movie, but they weren’t enough to overcome my disgust at the changes to the story.

This movie has inspired me never again (with a few notable exceptions, e.g. Harry Potter) to read a book before I watch the movie, or watch the movie after having read the book, because the book is always better. I guess that means I won’t be watching the Golden Compass, which is coming out soon.

A story about "Asimov on Science Fiction" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a collection of essays about science fiction by the late great Isaac Asimov. I learned a lot about the philosophy and history behind science fiction, and the difference between science fiction and sci-fi. Enjoyable, but I chose not to read every single essay since there was some overlap between the various essays.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a somewhat chilling science fiction story in the style typical of the late ‘50s. The movie pacing is typical of movies of that era (very different from today’s movies) but otherwise I quite enjoyed it.

A story about "Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I had the “honey roasted” variety for breakfast this morning. In general, it’s pretty good, but I’m getting kind of sick of it because DH bought one of those huge double-normal-size boxes, and I’ve been eating it for weeks.

A story about "Kern's Horchata" — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I tried the mango variety and it was really weird. I don’t regret trying it, but I do regret spending money on it.

To be fair, I’ve never had real horchata before, but this stuff probably isn’t very close anyway. It’s kind of like a cross between really runny eggnog and Kern’s mango nectar.

A story about "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read this as part of a book club.

It’s mostly a philosophy book, but having the based-on-a-true-story plot as a framework for the philosophy essays makes it readable. It’s not bad, fairly thought-provoking.

A story about "Dune (Extended Edition)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is one of my group of friends’ favorite movies. Mostly we watch it as a drinking game, but we quote it frequently.

“The sleeper has awakened!”

WORTH CONSUMING!

Cute movie. A little bizarre, but I liked it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

The plot was sweet and unconventional, and I loved the method of storytelling. The film (being French) included all sorts of funny details that would not have been included in an American film.
