A story about "Kushiel's Avatar (Kushiel's Legacy)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I agree with paperstar’s assessment that this book wasn’t quite as good as the first book of the series. I enjoyed the majority of the book, but since I’m not really a huge fan of the character Hyacinthe, parts of the book were kind of annoying to me. But overall I liked it. It makes me want to read the first book again :-)

Meh — 3 years ago

I’ve seen it twice now, and both times I only thought it was ok. I don’t know why…it has most of the elements I enjoy in other Disney films, but this one just didn’t resonate with me.

Well, obviously it wasn’t bad enough to keep me from watching it a second time…

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was expecting that this movie would leave the story open for a sequel, but this really went to the extreme. In fact, the end of the movie left so much unresolved that I really feel like it was only half of a really long movie. So…since I’ve really only seen half of the movie, I’m not going to write a review quite yet.

A review of "Phone Booth" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The idea behind “Phone Booth” is that Colin Farrel’s character can’t leave the phone booth he is in, or else he will be shot by a sniper. This means that the entire movie is filmed in one place. I thought this movie was worth watching once, simply because the constraint of filming the movie in one location leads to more character development and phychological exploration. But I would never watch this movie again, simply because Kiefer Sutherland’s voice is so irritating. And by the setup of the movie, he talks a LOT.

A story about "A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It took me a few chapters to really get into this book, but once I did, I didn’t want to put it down. (I did have to put it down, several times, since it’s a long book!) It’s sort of a light fantasy genre, it’s about a different world, in which magic and magical creatures exist, but aren’t very common. I was kind of surprised that I liked (loved!) this book, since it involves two elements which I usually don’t care for: (1) a lot of politics, and (2) storytelling following many different characters. I usually find (2) to be too confusing (especially in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series), but the characters’ stories are all closely intertwined so I was able to follow along quite well.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!

A story about "Finding Nemo" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve watched this movie about three times now. I generally tend to like the mainstream kids movies, and Finding Nemo is no exception. It’s not as good as some of the other Pixar movies, but it’s still pretty good. I can’t wait to have kids so I can watch it with them!

A story about "Shaolin Soccer" — 3 years ago

I watched this movie last Thursday over at the Death Star. It was worth watching once. There were a good number of hilarious scenes, but there was also a lot of slapstick comedy (I shouldn’t have been surprised; my friend S is the one who really wanted to watch it, and he’s a huge fan of slapstick, apparently.)

Before we watched the movie, S said it was pretty much like Mario Strikers (a GameCube soccer game.) After watching the movie, I have to agree.

Fun for all ages — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie definitely had elements that made it fun for all ages. I enjoyed most of the silly jokes intended for the kids and also the references to pop culture that would clearly go over the young ones’ heads. I also liked all the cute little bunny rabbits!

So bad, it's just really bad. — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Usually, MST3K movies are worth watching, simply because they’re so bad they’re good. This movie, however, is so bad it’s just really bad. The jokes made by the MST3K guys were simply not enough to make up for how truly horrible the movie is. I regret the hour and a half of my life that I lost to this movie.

Why is the movie so bad?
1. Scenes are dragged out waaaay too long. I didn’t really need to see 10 minutes of driving in the countryside.
2. These long scenes are continued across multiple scene breaks. 10 minutes worth of girls wrestling in the sand is not made any more significant by the fact that it is broken into four 2.5-minute chunks.
3. There are scenes which are completely unrelated to the storyline in any way. I did not need to see three scenes of that couple making out in their car.
4. The characters are not compelling. I can’t identify with any of them. None of their actions are in any way realistic.
5. There are waaay to many non-sequitors and unexplained occurences. It makes the plot hard to follow. What little plot there is…

I feel like the movie would have been somewhat compelling if unnecessary scenes had been cut, leaving about 3 minutes of action. That would have been a short film which would have had an interesting message, made the audience think, and been worth watching.

Back off, I'm a scientist. — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve seen this movie many times and I still keep catching new jokes every time I watch it. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd are very funny writers – there are so many quotable lines. Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler) does great deadpan delivery of his jokes. Bill Murray’s character (Peter Venkman) is delightfully egotistical – that’s the kind of character he plays best, in my opinion. The story is kind of silly, of course, but that’s part of the charm of the movie. Five stars!
