This movie was why i hated Jack Nicholson growing up, because he was so annoying and creepy as the Joker. Now that i have grown up and usually enjoy comic book films i decided to rewatch this: i was greatly disappointed. There was so little character development for Wayne/Batman and so little chemistry between him and the reporter (whom i was confusing with the Joker’s love interest at first, the two women look so much alike). This movie’s costuming has a chaotic clash of time periods, too, with the gangsters looking like they stepped out of Dick Tracy or a film noir, while many of the hairdos and extras’ outfits were straight out of the 80’s. The special effects were quite good, but not very believable, and the dialogue was absolutely horrible. The cops are corrupt and inept, the new D.A. doesn’t even get to go to court (poor Williams didn’t have much of a part here), and the reporter is nowhere near likeable or capable of winning a Pulitzer (he just is so annoying and rude and can’t even get a quote).

It had been a very long time since i had seen this, but i hate this movie now just as much as the first time i watched it as a kid, only now i have studied movies and have the terms to voice why. i know lots of people love Batman, but he’s just not appealing to me: i want the actor underneath the suit to actually have muscles and a personality so i can care about him. i’m probably opening myself up to flaming, but that’s just the way i feel.

Destination Moon (1950)

This was dry, had a slow plot, was pretty boring, and in hindsight is both unbelievable and has foolish protagonists. The special effects were great for the time, but the book was about four teenagers and an uncle, not a conglomeration of businesses, not to mention the distinct lack of Nazis. i guess they mauled good stories even back then; wish they would have stuck to the book.

Midnight Sun (partial draft)

Someone spread this around the internet w/o Stephenie Meyer’s permission and now she feels (understandably) violated. i stayed up til 4am reading this last night, then had to go to sleep, and the first thing i did when i woke up was finish the story (such as it is: it’s unfinished and abandoned now, though posted at StephenieMeyer.com). i have always wanted to read the Harry Potter books from Ginny’s pov and the same was true of the Twilight Saga, i just want to get inside Edward’s brain! i don’t feel that this is quite as good as Twilight, some of the scenes don’t seem to connect perfectly (yet… this is a rough draft after all), but it is still excellent. i cannot wait to read whatever Meyer writes next.

The Serpent and the Rose (War of the Rose Trilogy)

No, this isn’t a romance novel, it’s about the niece of a corrupt king and a farm boy who wants to become a knight. They fall in love when the King tries to kill his brother-in-law (her father) and attacks her duchy. The King is trying to find the Serpent and release it from its prison where it sleeps (yes, there are Biblical parallels, such as the Prince who helped defeat the Serpent, but i don’t believe that she is going for Biblical accuracy or allegory here). Averil and Gereint have to find some unconventional allies in order to take back the duchy, but the battle isn’t over, just held off until the next book. Gets a little slow about 3/4 through but still a page turner for the most part. There’s a lot of magic in these books, and different types, but like in Harry Potter people are born with the powers and have to learn to control them (for the most part). Definitely a good read.

This story has been done soooo many times, and it did bring some new aspects to the story, but overall it was just too predictable. The end credits in particular annoyed me, can’t they come up with anything original? Steve Carell was excellent (i think this is the first “serious” role i’ve seen him in) but the movie was just… okay.

I was sooo sure that the woman with the spoiled brat was going to be the doctor’s family, but they weren’t. What’s odd about this movie is that they don’t look at why he was having an affair… was he just bored, is she really a workaholic control freak or something? Also, who tells their wife lots of things about the woman they are having an affair with? i have really started to appreciate Nathan Fillion as an actor, but when it comes down to it, he was pretty much a scumbag, just like every other man in this film.

Andy Griffith was amazing, maybe the best i’ve ever seen him… and i used to watch the Andy Griffith Show and Matlock reruns with my Grandad. He reminds me so much of my Grandad, really, an old softy underneath.

i guess Jenna’s life wasn’t as horrible as she thought it was, cuz she seemed to keep things pretty much the same, it’s just that everything seemed more bright. i want to have a piece of pie now.

The only thing i don’t understand about this movie is why the lesbian daughter broke up with the writer… i mean, if you’re writing about someone, doesn’t that mean that you love them? i guess she did reveal her secret, but other than that i don’t get it.
