A review of "A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)"

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)

by George R.R. Martin

Fast, fun read. There were some irritating plot holes (the Bran storyline, which was clumsy), but I’m looking forward to the sequels. It’s very entertaining, and that’s all I want right now.

A fast, interesting read, very thought provoking on a number of topics.

A review of "Shadow Heart 18-Copy Floor"

Shadow Heart 18-Copy Floor

by Laura Kinsale

I wanted brain candy, and was told that Kinsale writes fun and good romance. Wrong on both counts. Flat, dull, and typical – and why the romance genre gets such a bad rap. Fun reading does not have to be stupid, too. Sigh.

A review of "Moby-Dick: or, The Whale"

Moby-Dick: or, The Whale

by Herman Melville

Starts off strong, and is wonderfully interesting. And then, all the tangents become a bit much. About 1/2 through, it became a trial.
When Melvillie is writing about the Pequod and her hands, I could not put the book down. When the tangents go on and on… not so much.
This is a good book for evenings, a chapter at a time. It’s to be savored. For subway reading and the like, when you need a distracting plot, try something else.

I could not put it down. I will be reading this author again, and I would like to add this book to my collection.

This is one I’d like to own.

Why I gave up consuming "Silverlock: Including the Silverlock Companion (Nesfa's Choice, 26)"

Silverlock: Including the Silverlock Companion (Nesfa's Choice, 26)

by John Myers Myers

It has all the elements that I love – but it’s just too much. It’s one adventure after another, and not much is truly happening. Just name-dropping.

It’s amusing as a gues-the-reference activity… but other than that, ehh.

I gave up In the middle of part 2, and I doubt I will pick it up again. That said, I think I would have loved this as a child.

The Virgin Suicides (rated 5 stars)

Funny, sad, exciting, moving – it was a near-perfect book.
