A light, funny book — 3 years ago
I really enjoyed Don Quixote, U.S.A. Powell has a dry humor that reminds me in a way of Vonnegut, specifically Cat’s Cradle. The story takes place on a ficticious island called San Marco where the government is corrupt and there’s a revolution every few months. Arthur Peabody Goodpasture is a super-naive idealist who joins the Peace Corps and goes to San Marco to teach the natives to plant dwarf cavendish bananas to sell elsewhere and help their struggling economy. Arthur ends up in trouble many, many times, but he usually has no idea but saves himself anyway. A very entertaining, light read. I’m pretty sure it’s out of print.
