A story about "More Stan Getz for Lovers" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Stan Getz just has such an incredible sound. He may not be my favorite saxophonist but his tone is pretty much ideal. Thus, his gorgeous ballads are perfect on an album “for lovers.” Next time I want to set the mood for a candlelight dinner this will be my soundtrack of choice…

WORTH CONSUMING!

I finally got around to seeing this movie and found it completely hilarious. George Clooney’s facial expressions just killed me. And of course, it left me wanting to run out and buy the soundtrack, with all that wonderful bluegrass. I just adore Dan Tyminski (who sang “Man of Constant Sorrow”).

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was the first thing I listened to by Elliott Smith and I absolutely loved it. From the first song I was hooked by the vibrant piano and overall dramatic sound, combined with his high, melancholy vocals. My absolute favorite song is “Color Bars,” which for some reason reminds me of the Beatles, but nearly all of the songs are standouts.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I found this album sort of repetitive and forgetable. Couldn’t really get into it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

I can’t even sleep.

It was everything I hoped and dreamed it would be. (And trust me, I actually have been having HP-related dreams the past few nights.)

I laughed, gasped, cried out, bit my knuckles, squealed, and sobbed, but even though Ms. Rowling took me straight through hell and back, it was a brilliantly crafted story and my heart is still pounding from the adrenaline.

Surprisingly really enjoyed the album. I don’t know why I say “surprisingly;” I guess I wasn’t expecting to like Wilco as much as I did. There were a lot of catchy and memorable songs on it (much more so than “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot”) and I found myself wishing I knew the words so I could sing along.

She’s incredible. This album is very different from “Begin to Hope” (the first of hers I’d listened to, which is more sort of radio-friendly) but equally as good if not better due to its uniqueness. Okay, I’ll probably listen to the radio-friendly stuff more often, but it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate her more offbeat songs. The kind of things she can do with her voice, her quirky and often humorous lyrics (I’ve been using the word “pizzatarian” lately), and the fact that I don’t even know who to compare her to are all factors in this really captivating CD.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I liked it about as much as the first one: surprisingly quite a bit, for an action movie. (That last phrase is the key here.) I actually thought the plot was more interesting, because there was more mystery about what was going on with that Russian guy. But I was sad that Franka died in the first five minutes. All in all a fun movie with an intense car chase and some good acting.

A story about "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" — 2 years ago

Greg’s entry describes exactly how I felt about this album.

I love “Jesus, Etc.” – it was the first song I ever heard by them and I fell in love with it. But too many of the songs end with annoyingly drawn out…stuff, and maybe to some people that’s cool and “experimental,” but I just think the whole thing is sort of inaccessible. I once listened to “Poor Places” while walking alone at night, and the voice at the end robotically repeating “Yankee. Hotel. Foxtrot.” creeped the heck out of me.

Action movies aren’t my favorite genre, so when I am thoroughly entertained by one, it’s a pretty good sign. The characters and backstory could have been more developed, so hopefully some mysteries are waiting until the sequel before they’re clarified. The premise pulled me right in and Matt Damon carried his role off well.
