Why I recommend "Say Her Name: A Novel" — 9 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Frank loved/loves his wife, Aura.

After spending time with him and his grief, I love Aura.

I love Frank & I love Aura deeply right along with him. This book speaks to love & loss. — A gift.

At one point he stands on a street corner, was he watching another company, & thinks:

‘I want my friend back,’ I thought; we talked in signs and formed a great team… ‘Hold her tight, if you have her; hold her tight,’ I thought, that’s my advice to all the living. ‘Breathe her in, put your nose in her hair, breathe her in deeply. Say her name.’

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book was well done, and truly awful all at once. Without being polemical, Erdich draws our attention to injustice that exists /to this day/ in regards to the racialized ‘justice’ system that hides behind out dated & racist laws that continue to be ‘on the books’. Fiction frequently portrays more ‘truth’ than the news. We are better than this.

A review of "The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do To Get More of It" — 19 weeks ago

Excellent book! — lots of practical hints, as well as better understanding (& new found curiosity) of what governs our decisions.

Practical exercises, take it slow, you’ll learn much about how you ‘tick’ even if you don’t think you have a ‘problem’ with willpower…

Why I recommend "The History of Love" — 23 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Sweet, delicious prose explaining why we wave our arms when we talk weaves into a love story that is not your usual love story. I can hear my mother dismissively saying “it’s weird”. Yes, there are some twists & turns. Stick with it, it will reward you in the end.

A story about "The Hunger Games (Book 1)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

wanna talk about “all consuming”!?? I started reading this last night and was up in the middle of the night reading. I should finish sometime tonight!

Yes, a little bit “The Lottery”, and a little “Lord of the Flies” — in the light of Whitney Houston’s death, there is also a little too much reality. The way our entertainers are manipulated by their handlers to be what we want them to be — this doesn’t always lead to empowered and embodied entertainers. They are one thing on stage, and quite another behind closed doors when the handlers leave them to their ’victor’s village’, still moments away from the snaky beck and call of those hungry to consume.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s only 32 page, but I kept highlighting.

A story about "Alcatraz: A Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years" — 1 year ago

Iliked reading about the history of the island and of early California. little mention of the native peoples of the area. As if history started with Europeans. Still what I did get was well done. I just wanted another pre-chapter.

I tuned out (& my library time expired through the escape attempts – not where my interest lies)

A story about "Chasing China: A Daughter's Quest for Truth" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was a good light read. I was a bit disappointed by how neatly the threads were tied up. It skipped along amicably and then suddenly too a bit of gangster turn, and then tied everything up in the end. I’d pick it up if I had to do it all over again, though I don’t know that I’d go out of my way.
