not better than sex — 1 year ago

The conclusion is that politics is not, in fact, better than sex. Having read almost every other HST book, this book is not, in fact, as good as any of them. But it is short and to the point.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a muddled half-essay, half-autobiography, about a young man’s search for truth via psychedelics and new age philosophies. While I can’t agree with the basic thesis, it does make you think.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a great intro guide for people who want to get into the backcountry.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is definitely a great book for people who backpack. It’s a little intimidating for a newbie, though. I’d recommend something else first.

I didn’t realize when I put this on hold at the library that it was as old as I was. Much of it is still valid, amazingly enough. I mean designs for sewing jackets and bags haven’t changed much, and Gore-Tex was invented by then. I can’t really recommend it other than a historical artifact, though.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s somewhat odd to read 90% of this, take acid, see Gonzo, then finish this a couple days later. Cathartic as anything, though.

The best thing about this is the cool bottle shape (“Eco-Shape™ Bottle” if you’re into re-using bottles, which I am.

A story about "War" — 1 year ago

My boyfriend took care to tell me there was a twist, which was easy enough to figure out 15 minutes into the film. It’s much more enjoyable knowing it.

HST brings it on — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I actually read the Gonzo Papers in reverse order, which was kind of fun. The Reagan/Bush years are more depressing, and this one focuses more on Watergate, which brings out the best in Thompson’s righteous indignity and gloating. It also has a lot of his pre-Hells Angels/F&L writing, which shows that he wasn’t just tossing shit on paper, but he really paid his dues in South/Central America and other places. I think I would have preferred to read it all in chronological order, but that’s just me.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Too much politics, not enough drugs or music.
