Oh, the wonderful wonderful BBC version of Narnia. The amazing memories I have of watching this as a child. Sunday afternoons, sat in front of the fire with sandwiches and tea, crumpets and warm fruit cake, jumping with fright at Morgram’s transformation from supposed statue to snarling wolf, desperately wanting to stroke Aslan’s mane, being slightly in love with Richard Dempsey’s Peter. Oh, to be a child again in those wonderful days when Sunday afternoon telly was worth watching…

I fully expected this film to be spectacular, what with it starring the wonderful Dames Maggie and Judi, but how disappointing. The acting was marvellous, the music beautiful, the film shot gorgeously, but what was the point? There was a very poor storyline. At the end of the film I was up and out of the cinema as fast as I could go, but on my way to the exit I passed rows of old ladies still gazing rapturously at the screen – maybe I’m just not old enough to appreciate this film fully yet. Perhaps I’ll check it out again in a few decades…
