Two kids, Rebecca Richards and Tane Williams, are lying in the middle of a field looking at the stars. Rebecca, a smart girl who corrects teachers, states that time travel is impossible. Tane, an artistic young man with a musical bent, questions her statement and asks why. Then asks about sending messages. After a lot of thinking, Rebecca comes up with an idea to check on receiving messages. It involves looking for sequences in gamma ray emissions using a program that she wrote. The first message that they get and translate gives them the winning lottery numbers and an SOS.
