One of his earlier books. This was originally published in 1987, and it shows. It’s almost a period piece, set in the dim and distant past where no one had mobile phones, only a few people had computers (or ‘word processors’ as they were called back in the dawn of time) and the Irish ‘troubles’ loomed large in the everyday life of Londoners. It lacks the finesse of the Rebus series, and the storyline jumps around quickly, making it more difficult for the reader to weave everything together into a cohesive storyline. Or maybe I was just feeling the jet lag. Good, but not Rankin at his best.
