Why I recommend "Frances Hodgson Burnett's a Little Princess" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book totally fascinated me when I read it as a child. It helped me understand what it must be to be a poor child without family, but it also made me want to make her world better. When I reached the ending I think I cheered!

Why I recommend "Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book is a marvelous introduction to words about feelings that every child needs to know to express him or herself. It is also wonderfully silly, and the rotating eyes in the face feature is loved by both kids and adults.

Why I recommend "Fun with Dick and Jane" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

You have to have read Dick and Jane if only to understand all the allusions to it that are out there. You should also have a look so you see how much methods of education have changed. Run, Spot, run!

A story about "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Penguin Popular Classics)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I enjoyed looking for things that were different from the Judy Garland movie. One of my favorites is that Dorothy’s shoes were originally silver, but were changed to the famous ruby slippers for the movie, presumably because silver would flash too much and not show up as well, and to take advantage of the brand new innovation of color in film.
Fans of the Oz books are legion. If you want to read them all there are 15 by Baum (the original author), 19 by Thompson, and about 134 books in all (credit goes to KidLit Club member CIARRAINIC for this information).

Why I recommend "The Chronicles of Narnia" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is an absolute classic series and consistently makes all the best of children’s literature lists. Lewis wa a friend of J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote another series based on a Christian allegory that you might have heard of, and both belong on everyone’s must read shelf. If you don’t want to pay attention to the underlying Christian message, it is still possible to read the series with enjoyment. I do agree with B.S that The Screwtape Letters is a very entertaining, ironic book which is worth reading, but it is also aimed at adults, not children, which must be taken into consideration in a comparison.

Why I recommend "Nancy Drew Series" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

OK I admit it, I haven’t read ALL the Nancy Drew Series, but I’ve read an awful lot of them once upon a time. Highly recommended by people in my KidLit Club. I am not that “Keene” on them now, as literature and all, they are kind of lame in my opinion, but I loved them at the time, so I’ll say they are worthwhile.
