A story about "Take Back Your Life!: Using Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 to Get Organized and Stay Organized (Inside Out)" — 3 weeks ago

A true review of this book can’t really come until after I’ve given the author’s suggestions for using Outlook more of a test run. And, to do so, you have to be willing to buy in full steam ahead. I’m adopting the system with some modifications. We’ll see. One of the primary lessons (that you can’t possibly “do it all” so you need to identify the most important things and dump the rest) seems to me to be worth the price of admission. The system is set up to support that notion.

Incidentally, I’m stunned that this book does not offer even a passing mention of David Allen’s Getting Things Done. Or, if it preceeds Allen’s book, that he doesn’t refer to this author’s work. They both are presenting almost identical concepts on productivity. This book just happens to walk you through Outlook as a tool to implement the concepts.

Update: I just found mention online that David Allen and Sally McGhee were collaborators. Still surprising that they don’t mention each other in their works.

A story about the last time I consumed "300" — 6 weeks ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I fell asleep 30 minutes in. Switched to watching while exercising. It made me quit exercising. Two weeks later, finally finished watching.

The animation was interesting for the first few minutes. Then the shallow story line dominated. The muscles and the animation were the only well-developed parts of this movie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Wouldn’t have thought that this movie was going to be as powerful, compelling, and visually arresting as it is from the descriptions of it. Even if you don’t think much of war movies, watch this one.

A story about "Wild Ducks Flying Backward" — 9 weeks ago

Be forewarned: it’s a collection of odds and ends. So, this book overall lacks the satisfying heft of a novel, but I laughed out loud at the essays that reminded me of his early novels. I encourage you to skip around a bit here. If you start reading a section and it isn’t speaking to you (like the art criticism), just move on to the next one. For me, the highlights were the travel essays, the bios, and the final section of “responses.”

A story about "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" — 9 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I started to watch this more than a year ago and had to pull myself away before the end (it was on the tube). I put it in the queue and finally watched the rest of it this week. Actually, I started again at the beginning and I’m glad I did. It helped me appreciate the pace of this film.

This is sentimental fare done perfectly. Somewhat quiet and a little dark, nothing much happens except a fulfilled life. I found Greer Garson particularly charming as the catalyst for Chips’ success. If you want action, this movie is not it. But if you want sentimentality, this movie is perfect.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Good grief, this is a funny movie! This goes into my list of all-time favorite comedies. Peter Sellers is hilarious physically and verbally. The rest of the cast are spot-on as well. If you are watching a version that has the theatrical trailer on it (the one with a bullet telling the story) be sure to watch that, too. Great humor abd animation!

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Somewhere along the line, I was tricked into thinking that this movie was worth watching. I was misled.

A story about "Trapped in the Closet: Chapters 1-22" — 22 weeks ago

I admit to only half watching after about an hour. Great plot synopsis and quotes on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trapped_in_the_Closet.

WORTH CONSUMING!

That David Lean knows how to make a 3 hour and 20 minute film move along at a rapid clip. That said, I found the politics a bit confusing (and am not now inspired to learn more) and I do have to wonder why we should like the Omar Sharif character when his women are much more generous and faithful than he is.
