WORTH CONSUMING!

I might prefer Wodehouse’s short stories. I like getting just a taste of him now and then. Hmm… then why can’t I resist buying up the entire stock of a used book store’s Wodehouse? I wonder if the pages are laced with crack.

Funny, Napoli doesn’t usually make me feel like she’s trying to breathe life into a history lesson, but that’s what this felt like. Maybe it’s the complication inherent in Greek mythology – the unending lists of names and places and chains of events. The book is compelling nonetheless. I admire how Napoli creates humor without bringing an anachronistic Disney-esque cultural familiarity to her work.

I’m hoping for a Melissa Banks-esque surprise in this one. (H-Bomb suggested this one.)

Otherwise a bit strange and arhythmic.

Strangely and appeallingly un-Hollywoody in parts, and I was distracted by Topher’s walleye, but enjoyed nonetheless.

And this is the result: a Romeo and Juliet style romance that doesn’t end in tears, exactly. Yes, there is singing. Yes, there is dancing. Yes, it’s strange and takes itself a little too seriously. Still, I was entertained.

It’s not that ol’ Sean really IS old Sean in this film; I think it’s more that the Bond movies were on the cusp of a big style change – not quite estranged from the Cold War or engaged with the technology war enough to make real sense.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Loved the nonfiction bits, could take or leave the poetry. I was disappointed with Ms. Nelson and her completely hideous use of Italian stage dialect, or whatever it was supposed to be. The book itself is a thing of beauty – design-wise, illustrations, etc.

I found a leetle too much in common with Monica, and was surprised at how easy her redemption seemed to come to her, but overall I felt this was a good read with believable, well-developed characters. Tashjian is an expert when it comes to creating awful, gut-clenching, but super-realistic situations for her teens.

WORTH CONSUMING!

How did I know half the songs on this album and not know this woman’s name? She seems to sit somewhere in the web occupied by Joni Mitchell, Blood Sweat & Tears, maybe Motown, definitely blues… Strange and alluring.
