Peeps are a great treat — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I have always looked forward to Peeps when Easter came around. They are a treat that is an acquired taste, as they are just marshmallow and sugar, but I fall into the camp of people who like them.

Nowadays Peeps are around on more holidays, but I try to limit my Peep intake. They are a very sweet treat, and I’d rather have them as a way to treat myself a few times a year.

One of my favorite Michael Jackson albums — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

We had this on cassette tape when it first came out. My sister and I used to listen to it all the time. I decided to hit iTunes and get some of my favorites from the album today.

One of my favorites from the album is Jam. I love that song so much. My sister and I would sing it all the time, but we never got the lyrics right. Michael is a great singer, but sometimes it’s a little hard to understand what he’s singing. That doesn’t stop me from enjoying him though. :)

The music video for this song is the reason I love the song so much though. I love the scenes with Michael Jordan teaching Michael Jackson how to play basketball. Michael Jackson is so much shorter than Michael Jordan, so I loved it when Michael Jackson climbed the ladder to dunk a basket. And of course, the scenes with Michael Jordan learning how to dance like Michael Jackson were very funny. :)

I also really like Remember the Time. It’s a great song, and the video is really great too. Every time I see this video and see Eddie Murphy as an Egyptian pharaoh, I can’t help but think about “Coming to America”. :P

And of course, I love Black or White. I still remember when the video premiered on Fox after the Simpsons. The morphing effects were so amazing when the video first came out, and they are still neat to look at today.

I also love Heal the World. It’s such a beautiful song. The video for this song is so moving. It really makes you want to do something to try to help our situation on this Earth.

Another song that I really love is Will You be There. It’s a beautiful song, and the choir harmonizing in the chorus is really amazing. I always have loved listening to a well performed choir.

But, other than my favorites, I really like every song on this album except for She Drives Me Wild. The background sounds are a little to distracting for me to enjoy it. Though, I do like the harmonizing parts of the song.

Good food, and I love the rolls — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Subway is my mom’s favorite restaurant. She could eat there every day. I don’t love Subway that much, but I do enjoy it. Their subs are really good. They have fresh meat, cheese and vegetables, as well as a variety of toppings like Oil and Vinegar and Ranch Dressing. I like to experiment with the toppings, as I’m not a creature of habit like my mom, and I enjoy trying new things.

Best of all though is the rolls. I absolutely love their Parmesan Oregano bread. That’s the one thing that I don’t change too often. I have tried the other rolls, but I always come back to Parmesan Oregano.

Some really great songs — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

When I first heard SOS on the radio, I couldn’t help but be distracted by the “Tainted Love” song in the background. After a while it grew on me though, and I found that I began to enjoy the song a lot. I’ve seen a lot of Rihanna music videos since then, and since I enjoyed most of her videos that I have seen, I decided to listen to some of her albums.

Since SOS was the first song that I heard of hers, I decided that I would listen to “A Girl Like Me”. Weird Al’s “Straight Outta Lynwood” taught me to listen to the songs on the album first before I buy it, as I might only like a fraction of the songs on the album, so individual iTunes purchases might be a better choice.

That is the case for me here, but iTunes has definitely made me give my purchase a “Worth Consuming” rating, as I really enjoy those songs that I did like from the album.

The other song on the album that I love as much as SOS is Unfaithful. Rihanna sings beautifully in this song, and she really seems to reflect the pain of the song’s message through her voice.

If it’s Loving that You Want is another great song, but I prefer the version in the music video over the song on the album. I am purchasing a lot of her music videos on iTunes, as I’m going to be using her music videos for my exercise workouts. She’s a real inspiration for me, as she is so beautiful. If I can be even a fraction as beautiful as she is once I lose weight, I’ll be very happy.

There is one song on the album that I’m torn over. I really like Rhianna’s portions of Break it Off, but Sean Paul ruins it for me. I don’t mind his rapping portions, but I find his shouting as Rhianna is singing to be really distracting. It might grow on me, and maybe I can find myself enjoying it like I did with SOS, but right now I’m not too fond of it.

My favorite puzzle games come together on one cartridge — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My mom and I both loved Tetris and Dr. Mario on the NES, so when I saw this at Video King for rent, I couldn’t resist picking it up.

Tetris is a great translation from the Nintendo’s NES version. The music is nicer sounding due to the better sound capabilities from the Super Nintendo, but the gameplay remains the same, and the background does not distract from the game.

Dr. Mario on the other hand is a different matter. The background is made in bright colors such as white and pink, whereas the NES version had subdued colors like dark yellow and black. It is a bit distracting, but I was able to adjust to it after a while. The music is another matter. I always preferred “Fever” over “Chill”, but for the Super Nintendo version, I much prefer “Chill”. For some reason, Nintendo decided to pepper the “Fever” music with monkey noises, which was very distracting and I didn’t find it appealing at all. “Chill” on the other hand, was a nice remix of the original. The thing that I really didn’t like about this version though, was that they took the wackiness out of the game. The cutscenes with the various objects flying over the viruses sitting in a tree are no longer present. This is most disappointing in the last cutscene on the “hi” difficulty level, as it acts as an ending of sorts for the original NES game. In this version, you just get a congratulations screen and a static picture of one of the viruses.

I’d play Tetris on this cartridge over the NES version any day, but for Dr. Mario I’d much rather play the original version.

The best burger I have ever eaten — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I went to In-N-Out Burger in August 2000 when I drove out to California as I liked the sound of the name and the retro look of the logo. As I was born and raised in New York, I had never heard of In-N-Out before, so I wasn’t sure what I was going to get. I went through the drive through and ordered a double-double and fries. They were really delicious. Both were the freshest fast food that I have ever eaten.

When I flew back out to California in May 2002, my friends in California informed me of the various ways to order the food. They told me that I could order as many patties and cheese on a burger that I wanted, and recommended the “animal style” burger which was made with mustard, pickles, and grilled onions.

Wow. That combination made the burger the tastiest burger I had ever eaten, including homemade, restaurant, and fast food burgers. I stopped at In-N-Out many times the short time that I was there. I just wish that there were In-N-Out Burger restaurants on the East Coast. Well, I guess it’s probably good that they don’t have them here or I’d end up way overweight. :P

An absolute blast to play — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I love Super Mario Kart to pieces. I still play it today, sometimes through ZSNES over the internet with other people. It is still as much fun to play now as it was when it came out.

The characters are just adorable, and they are all animated wonderfully. I always get a chuckle when I hear a loud rumble and see Donkey Kong Jr. fly by and raise his hands triumphantly into the air. Each character plays differently as well, with DK Jr. and Bowser starting slow but getting a fast top speed, and Toad and Koopa Troopa taking off the quickest. The tracks are all well laid out, and range from ice courses, to water courses, to courses on bricks built over lava like the Bowser levels in Super Mario Bros. Rainbow Road to this day still has me at the edge of my seat as I play it, as it has so many twists and turns and holes, and no walls. I love all of the Mario Kart games that I have played over the years, but so far this one remains my favorite.

Super Bomberman is a very addictive game — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My mom was a big fan of Bomberman for the NES, so when Super Bomberman came out for the Super Nintendo, my dad bought it for her as a present. She would play it way into the early morning hours, playing until 5 AM and then waking up at 7 AM to go to work. The Super Bomberman music became a very familiar sound in our house.

It’s no wonder that she was so hooked, it is a great game. I spent many hours playing it as well, but I wasn’t quite as addicted as my mom was. :)

The character designs in this game are just too cute. The levels are all themed, with a circus level, a metropolis level, and a battle arena, among others. In the original Bomberman, you had to go through 50 stages, each one looking like the last but with different brick layouts and enemies. This game has much more character, although it has less levels. This game also pits Bomberman against bosses at the end of the stages. You have to dodge their attacks and place bombs continuously until they finally explode. When my mom got to the first boss for the first time, I remember how weird it seemed to have a boss fight in a bomberman game, but it worked so well, it all seemed natural after that.

Wonderful game that holds up even today — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Super Mario 64 is a great game. It brought the Super Mario 64 series into the 3D era beautifully. Everything translated perfectly, and the enemies were given a dose of personality to boot. I love the 3D incarnation of the goofy goombas, who walk around oafishly and then jump once they see you and move their little feet as fast as they can to catch you. The koopa troopas are also delightful in the translation, as they now run from you when they see you (no doubt traumatized after all those years of Mario taking their shells), and you can even surf on their shells if you can get them out of it.

I love the inclusion of MIPS the rabbit. The Super Mario series was inspired by Alice in Wonderland, so it’s great to see a tip of the hat towards the Alice novels with the rabbit who is in a hurry because he’s late for an appointment with Bowser.

The ending also makes me laugh every time with Mario subtly looking at the camera after Princess tells the Toads to bake a cake for Mario as a reward for his efforts as if Mario is thinking “I’ve gone through all this trouble just for a lousy cake?!” :P

A great story, but it has a clunky interface — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The Feeble Files has a great storyline. You play as an alien named Feeble who’s job is to create crop circles in farmer’s fields on Earth. Throughout the course of the game, you go from a model citizen to a rebel who is intent on uncovering the true nature your the government: one who forces all it’s citizens to be obedient and docile and punishes those who have any form of independent thought.

The voice acting is supurb, and the art is wonderful. It is presented in an early form of 3D, sort of a combination between two dimensional and polygonal graphics. Regardless of the graphic choices, the game is still a sidescrolling point and click adventure game, but the interface leaves a lot to be desired. Everything is done through the use of Feeble’s communication device, and it can become quite tedious to have to go into the device to do even the most simple of tasks. When I got through with the game it felt more like a chore than anything else. It’s a shame too – with a more typical point and click interface such as those used in Adventuresoft’s previous Simon the Sorcerer games, this could have been one of my favorite adventure games. As it stands, it is a game that I am glad that I played, but one that I am unlikely to ever play again.
