A story about "The Predictors: How a Band of Maverick Physicists Used Chaos Theory to Trade Their Way to a Fortune on Wall Street" — 5 years ago

At the crossroads of pure science and practical application, and written clearly and compellingly with an eye to the cutting-edge science, the fast-paced financial markets, and the lives of the “maverick physicists” who have put themselves in the middle of all this.

A story about "Ballad Of The Sad Cafe" — 5 years ago

McCullers has a wonderful storytelling “voice.” She is at once detached from and intimately involved with her characters. Never read this before, but I love it with a quiet, deep passion.

A story about "The Odyssey" — 5 years ago

The story is wonderful. Rouse’s prose translation is a little underwhelming sometimes, as he tried to make clear that Homer spoke like regular people, and so used some “regular people” language from Britain in the 1930s. His essay on “Homer’s Words” is terribly frustrating, alternately incomprehensible and overly simplistic.

A story about "The Orestes Plays of Aeschylus: Agamemnon; The Libation Bearers; The Eumenides" — 5 years ago

Murder, cannibalism, the cursed House of Atreus. What more could you ask for? Aeschylus’ poetry (at least as translated by Paul Roche) is very moving, visceral. This is also one of the most important tales from the Ancient Greeks for me, as it deals with the destructive energies passed down from generation to generation until someone has the courage to face the Furies.

Dionysus is the irrrational in humans, our chthonic heritage, which must be acknowledged and honored lest it drive us madly to destruction.

Krazy and Ignatz are one of the great pop-culture couples of all time, and George Herriman is (was) one of the true geniuses in the comics field.
