A story about "Stephanie Daley"

Stephanie Daley

by Hilary Brougher

Amber Tamblyn is a fine actress and I will watch anything she does artisically. I’ve watched her act since she was a younger gal and have enjoyed watching her career unfold. The movie itself is a very good independent film. It is one of those that has flair and culture, and you can tell was made on a lower budget, but that makes it a better film. Excellent cast, and filming, the plot on the other hand could have used some work, there weren’t many twists and turns, and it ended predictably. You were rooting for your main character, only to have her fail. :( Such is life. Maybe it was the subject matter that didn’t agree with me.

Bullock is pheonomenal in this. It was just suspenseful enough not to confuse you, but to let you venture your own guesses as to what was going on. The best part was it didn’t have the ending one would expect.

While I did watch the entire thing, I am very wishy washy on whether or not I liked it and it is definitely not something I would watch again. It just made NO sense – kinda like a retro movie with too many pieces and not enough to tie it all up.

Watched it with my own kids, and they loved Falcor the flying dragon dog and want to watch it over and over again. Seems shorter now that I’m an adult though. I was preparing myself for a 3 hour excursion. :)

A story about "Jennie Gerhardt (Pine Street Books)"

Jennie Gerhardt (Pine Street Books)

by Theodore Dreiser

Definitely worth reading! Wanted to read this for some time and couldn’t put it down. Heartbreaking! Now we are in a 19th century setting for Jennie Gerhardt and basically what this book portrays is a modern day form of prostitution. Or potentially marriage. However, I must say that while Jennie needed the money and it was her intention to help her family out by conjoining with the Senator and Lester, she didn’t love either one at first. This leads me to another question: comparing several heroines from this same time period, who was the worst villian? Lily Bart? Undine Spragg? Sister Carrie? or Jennie Gerhardt? Lily was hardly a villian, she was virtious and that was what led to her eventual demise and situation. Undine Spragg takes it all as the most motivated, cut throat, stop at nothing villian, and Sister Carrie and Jennie seemed to be in the same place, although Sister Carrie was slightly more villianous. Excellent read, very well worth the time, and can easily be connected to many modern day women and their own situations, intentions and partnerships.

A story about "The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band"

Not your average expectation from a Rock band. Nikki’s portions drew me in completely and I understood a lot more about him from reading the book. All contributors wrote excellent chapters and you could really tell who was writing voicewise. Mick’s chapters were definitely awesome. I would read it again and again. Certain aspects of the biography did turn my stomach, the girls with the phone incident, but did we expect any less? Could barely put it down. Can’t wait for Heroin Diaries this September.

It is not one you want to put down, but have to to go about daily business. Anchee Min is a superb author and I have waited a year for this to come out. What I want to say is that, you care about Orchid as a character, you want to share her trials and tribulations, and daily life. You want to know who she is and cry when she experiences loss. She is a character that you want to respect and you can understand her choices in her running of China. Now where I want to play devil’s advocate—it is very rare for Yehonala to be respected in literature – she didn’t seem to be reknowed and a good Empress. I do want to read one of these pieces showing the other side, and I can’t wait for Anchee’s next work to come out!

This was a book that was worth consuming, however didn’t hold my interest. I know that Mao dies, I know that Jiang Chang ends up in prison committing suicide, so why read on. Min told us all this in the beginging. I love Anchee Min as an author, love her ideas, her history and her story, but I just had a real hard time feeling for any of these characters. Jiang Chang reminded me of a person who was just so unfeeling herself, so manipulative, so why care. There were points in the story where I felt sorry for her, a cheating husband, a disappointing career etc… Overall, good, but just didn’t hold my interest.

She reminds me somewhat of Undine Spragg from Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton with her strong relentlessness to get whatever she wants no matter what the cost to others. This could change, but somehow I doubt that because Lan already mentions many of the people who had wronged her earlier on in the book and how she had them offed later on in the name of communism. Very intersting, will keep reading – not the greatest, but definitely worth the read. Hopefully the Last Empress is as good as I hope

I’ve been enjoying the parts about them finishing off the house and puting on a roof and the floor, not to mention, all the little animals skittering and scattering around.

A strong positive twist on a potentially debilitating subject.

A story about "Little House on the Prairie Book and Charm (Charming Classics)"

A couple of things I have found interesting is that the book parralles very closely to the movie we watched a few weeks ago. I am really enjoying the wonder behind the simple life. I don’t like that pages and pages are dedicated to the explanation of things that I will never use which takes away from the story.. ie… how to build a chimney and fireplace. The wolf pack story was quite interesting and entertaining and so was the story about when they moved into their new home. Overall it is going well and we can’t wait to continue reading the series.

A story about "Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year"

Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year

by Anne Lamott

Okay, so I finally finished and I must say the ending the last 130 pages really made the book totatlly enjoyable. I almost didn’t want to finish reading it but I am glad that I did. What really added dimension to Annie’s journal was the fact that her friend Sammy got sick – not that this was a good thing, but it added the needed umph to the story. Unfortunately we find that Pammy did not beat her cancer in the end. I felt a little saddened about the fact that we didn’t get to hear the rest of Pammy’s story. I must say that it would be interesting for Lammott to do a follow up story to this so we can get a better idea of what Sam’s life was like after a year. Excellent job!!!

I will however finish it and do find it to be amusing in places. While it is in journal format, I find it quite interesting that the author is writing about her son’s first year of life and says what she feels. I wonder how her Sam felt when he read this later on in his life. She moves from love to hate, to love back and forth and calls him some pretty brutal names. Not to mention, it also amazes me, her being religious the language she uses. I guess that is just part of being human and I shouldn’t be judgemental on it at all because in a big sense I am the same way too.
