Shaun Of The Dead — 2 years ago

I originally saw this movie because the previews looked undeniably hilarious. I waited of course until the movie was available to rent because I was cautious regarding the type of humor that might be in the film. I was pleasantly surprised to find the movie wildly entertaining with very little gratuitous humor. This British movies’ premise is a spoof of the many American zombie movies (and the single British one), where the main character Sean finds himself battling zombies with presumably his best friend and roommate in order to save his as of recently ex-girlfriend. The mild manner of lead character Sean is ultimately what balances the hilarity of the movie, creating a sense of seriousness on the part of the characters, one which is ultimately the catalyst of humor. It is classic British humor and very enjoyable indeed.

Stranger Than Fiction — 2 years ago

I rented this because I was very intrigued by the plot of the story, not to mention a cast that included Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Maggie Gyllenhal. I thoroughly enjoyed the humorously subdued Will Ferrell, who did an excellent job playing a character who ironically enough was supposed to be devoid of humor. It was funny and touching at the same time. Moreover, there seemed a real chemistry between Will Ferrell’s character and that of Maggie Gyllenhal, whose spunky and believable portrayal of a bohemian like baker immediately and easily assumes a romantic opposite of Will Ferrell. It actually made Will Ferrell’s character very desirable as well. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompsons character’s were also charming and pleasantly represented. Furthermore, the film itself was shot with very pleasant angles and colors that changed with its main character. It was on a whole, very enjoyable.

Roswell (OTS) — 2 years ago

I purchased this album because I am a huge Roswell fan, and thought perhaps my favorite song from the series would be on it (I Will Love You by Fisher, a song which was unfortunately removed from the DVD’s as well). While a majority of the songs on the OTS are really not worth noting, three songs made it worth purchasing (I only buy albums if I like at least three songs); “Here With Me”, “Save Yourself”, and “Fear”. Of course you need not buy the album for those songs, they are well known enough that there are probably singles for purchase.

Sixteen Stone — 2 years ago

... is Bush’s best album. Chalk full of good music like “Comedown”, “Machinehead”, and “Glycerine” this album is definitely more bang for your buck if your a Bush fan. There other albums a good of course and worth having, but this one is bound to be the classic ruler against which all their others will be measured.

3. Bomb
4. Little Things
5. Comedown
6. Body
7. Machinehead
8. Testosterone
9. Monkey
10. Glycerine

Future Sex/Love Sounds — 2 years ago

I am an admitted Justin Timberlake Fanatic (a loyal follower during the times of the boy band regime) and so my review is most certainly biased. I am always more than ready to love his latest music and that hasn’t changed with this album. I really like how he changes his style from album to album and very much enjoy his collaborations (with the possible exception of Three 6 Mafia – WTH?). Plus he is downright sexy. Obviously, his best songs have already found their way to the top of the charts but other songs to be considered for their fun and funky edge is “Lovestoned” and “Damn Girl”. Bottom line it is great dancing music, and certainly kept me awake and alive when driving over 2000 miles across country this January. Thank you Justin!

Step Up — 2 years ago

I am an admitted dance-film addict. Moreover, I am fixated with Channing Tatum, mostly because he is exceedingly hot (that is a scientific term). Obviously I enjoyed the movie, although I prefer the preppy Channing of “She’s the Man”. Still, the film was fun and entertaining and while no one is going to win any academy awards it is an enjoyable feel-good movie all the same. If you like dancing movies, you will enjoy this one.

Nacho Libre — 2 years ago

Admittedly I did not voluntarily watch this film. Instead I was forced by my brother-in-law who swore it would be funny. Even after the first viewing I was only mildly entertained. I have no idea how I ended up watching the film again, undoubtedly by my sneaky brother-in-law, but I was surprised to find myself enjoying the film I had previously not cared for. Slowly but surly I have watched the film several times over, always accompanied by my husband who absolutely loved the film. In fact, it is large part due to his constant mimicking of the film that I probably now find so much humor in it. How very Monty Python of him!

Super Troopers — 2 years ago

I rated this as “wishy washy” because I would never recommend this movie to someone who I didn’t know had an affinity for gratuitous humor. However, I would definitely show the first fifteen minutes to anyone who enjoys spoof hilarity. The first fifteen are probably the most hilarious I have ever viewed. Even my husband, who might be considered more prudish than myself, enjoyed the initial part of this movie. It is too bad they couldn’t keep it up. Instead they filled the movie with such humor to be had in a bad Adam Sandler film or Reno 911.

Blades of Glory — 2 years ago

I tend to enjoy Will Ferrell as an actor, although I am always very cautious about seeing his movies because much of his humor tends to be more gratuitous than actually funny. However, I was encouraged by the previews, his costar Jon Heder, and my imminent boredom to see the movie. I certainly found a few parts of the movie entertaining, particularly the character of Jon Heder and the scene of their first skate as a couple. As a whole I would venture to say that the first half of the movie was very entertaining while the second half was only mildly (if at all) humorous. All the same, I would probably recommend the movie to someone who liked movies such as Nacho Libre or Night At The Roxbury.

Jews, God And History — 2 years ago

This was an excellent book. When I originally picked the book up I wasn’t sure what to expect. I wanted more than a general overview of Jewish history. I also wanted something that would help me understand the Middle East conflict better but also provide an objective analysis of it. This book did just that. That is not to say that there weren’t parts of the book I found really subjective in its material. The first few chapters dealing with the biblical history of the Jews seemed to be presented in a more cynical light (especially when Jesus Christ was introduced). Likewise the last chapter or two of the book also had a rather subjective tone dispersed through out its discussion of the middle eastern conflict in the last century. The majority of the book however, which discussed Jewish history between their biblical origins and their modern day circumstances, was a very interesting comprehensive analysis. I especially liked the author’s ability to differentiate the difference between anti-Jewish sentiments and anti-semitism. I was also encouraged by the author’s very objective analysis of circumstances where both Jews and Christians were victims (and more often than not, the Christians made up the majority of such victims). By the end of the book, one as a greater appreciation for the intriguing journey of the Jewish peoples. They are fascinating as a culture, and their ability to survive as such regardless of their home or their conquerors. The book does not deal with any recent middle eastern events given that the author died in the early nineties, but the analysis has definitely motivated me to get more information.
