The Secret History of the Pink Carnation — 2 years ago

I originally picked up this book because its cover was rather eye catching. When I read that it was a historical romance mystery, I couldn’t NOT read it. I had read some reviews that were less than enthusiastic but I decided to give it a try anyway (plus I got it for a buck at the Harvard book store). I was pleasantly surprised. I found the writing style very humorous and enjoyable, while not elegant it was certainly comical and sarcastic. The two story lines also managed to keep my attention regardless of their interweaving. I really enjoyed the main love story even if I was a little annoyed by it’s heroine. The end of the book is admittedly rather abrupt, but I suppose the desire to continue the modern storyline in another novel is a forgivable offense. It is a book I am sure I will read again and I look forward to reading The Masque of the Black Tulip.

Not Another Teen Movie — 2 years ago

This is another case of a bad movie with good music. Composed of remakes from popular 80’s songs, this soundtrack is sure to be loved, with each rendition retaining some nostalgia while creating a completely unique experience. Definitely an entertaining buy.

This is really an excellent Christian rock band. I have already listened to the CD enough times to drive my husband crazy :) Heavy beats melt with edgy melodic lyrics to create the perfect hard core worship. I will be greatly disappointed when they decided to sell out and go secular.

1. I’m So Sick
2. Fully Alive
3. Perfect
4. Cassie
5. Sorrow
6. I’m Sorry
7. All Around Me
8. Red Sam
9. There For You
10. Breathe Today

1984 by George Orwell — 2 years ago

This is a really fantastic book. I would not call it entertaining in the least, but it is certainly intellectually stimulating. It is ironic that I was reading this book at the same time as I began a discussion of sorts on the nature of the objective and subjective. This is definitely a book I will have to read again.

Sons and Lovers by D.H. Lawrence — 2 years ago

This book didn’t seem to have the normal climactic format that I had expected, which is perhaps why it is considered a piece of literature and not popular fiction. The book as a whole read rather flatly, without much action or drama, a fact lending itself to its rather autobiographical nature. It was nonetheless, very beautifully written. The book seemed more poetic in composition and most certainly more emotionally intense than perhaps would be expected. In is in fact the poetic sentiments and composition of the book that keep the reader so engaged into what would otherwise be a rather depressing work. It is ironic that a work that seems to focus so much on the reality of life would at the same time evoke a romanticism of feeling and words which it would normally criticize. That too also seems to be the conflict Paul Morel finds within himself.

Chevelle — 2 years ago

This group is quite possibly my favorite rock group. Both of their albums are bursting with hardcore rock music polished with a soft lyrical melody. While they seem as a whole more dedicated to the instruments than the lyrics, their writing still manages a sort of surprising poetic intensity that is pleasantly ironic against the tensions of their jarring instruments and occasional screaming. Unique and beautiful, this rock band is definitely worth a listen. And if accessible, their concerts are just as entertaining.

Nichole Nordeman — 2 years ago

Nichole is perhaps my favorite christian artist. I was introduced to her when I was in High School by my mother, and while I enjoyed her soothing soft voice and found the lyrics intriguing, I never really gave them much thought. A few years later however, as my interest in theology had grown, I really began to appreciate her lyrics. She is constantly inspiring a challenge to the status quo, projecting interesting questions and ideas, but always with a subtle humility. I have not been disappointed in any album she has made.

I might add that she is even more enjoyable to watch in concert.

Enya — 2 years ago

If I was stranded on a desert island and I could only take one artist with me…. it would be Enya.

With a beautiful and haunting voice, Enya transcends time and space to create an overwhelming surge of emotions in her listener.
