Why I recommend "The Shattering (Guardians of Ga'hoole, Book 5)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m marking this as “worth consuming” for the simple fact that it’s much better executed than all the previous books in the series. I don’t know whether the author had a sudden revelation that included the ability to write decent characterization and dialogue expressed in logical sentences and paragraphs, or if the editing is just much better than it was in the earlier books, but this one is the first book in the series that didn’t distract me with its beginner-ish awkwardness. WHEW.

Really quite terrible. — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Truly dreadful prose; completely unbelievable characters, dialogue and fight scenes; disjointed and unabsorbing plot; and a fourth-wall-breaking littering of seriously bizarre comic-bookish sound effects throughout. The idea had a good lot of potential, but alas, I don’t enjoy books solely for their potential. Having read this book, I’m avoiding all the Alice in Wonderland movies, miniseries, etc., that are currently coming out, out of sheer unwillingness to be reminded of the crap+cheese of this book. Hopefully, finally reading the original Lewis Carroll work will cleanse my soul and allow me to eventually experience other adaptations. Just not any from this universe, ever again, please.

Less annoying than the book — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Read the book just once, a few years back, so I don’t remember many of the details — but I do remember that I didn’t go on and read any of the other books because I was so sick of the characters by the end. ;) My impression of the movie is a lot better than my memory of the book, but this probably has something to do with Sam Elliott’s presence, the voice of Ian McKellen as Ioric, the on-screen cuteness of various characters, including Pantalaimon, and the fact that I didn’t have to read the sometimes insipid narrative and dialogue. Not the most coherent movie ever, but at least it makes more sense than Dragon Wars, and it’ll do for a fantasy fix if you can stand the “it’s all about the kids” plotline. The costumes were worth a look, too, and the soundtrack was nondescript to pretty good.

Why I recommend "The Illusionist (Full Screen Edition)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

An instant addition to my favorite movies list. Caught this by chance because I wasn’t feeling well and got up early while it was on. Beautifully filmed, wonderful costumes, consummate acting and a satisfying plot. The director has an amazingly delicate touch. I want to see what else he comes up with. :D

A review of "Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo" — 3 years ago

The boyfriend thought it was so bad he needs to inflict it on someone else. ;) I thought it was pretty entertaining as mockumentaries go — the point seems to be that there’s lots of stupid going on, and it does stupid pretty well…

Wanted to smack the endless “making the first record” bit in the middle of the movie, but I think that was also the point. ;) Probably more entertaining than some serious documentaries on real bands, as this at least knows it’s idiotic.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Thought it was a little pretentiously bizarre at the beginning, but the further along it went, the better I liked it — much like the main character.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s good laced liberally with crushed rosemary. :D

One of my favorite teas — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Earl Grey Creme is one of my favorite teas in general, and this one has a nice balance of bergamot flavor with the creamy vanilla note. The quality of the black tea isn’t so mediocre it interferes with the flavored bit, either. Good for the price, especially if you buy the loose tea!
