A story about "Gossip Girl #1: A Novel by Cecily von Ziegesar (Gossip Girl)" — 5 years ago

I’m reading the series at the moment, and I feel 17 years old and boy/fashion obsessed. The books are really for teenagers, but I think the author secretly wrote them for grown-up teens such as myself. It’s trashy, catty, and delicious. I can’t put it down. I’m sad when the bus ride is over in the morning because I have to wait the whole day to continue reading.

A story about "Man and Boy: A Novel" — 5 years ago

Like eating ice cream after only consuming brocolli for days on end, this book is really easy to read, sweet and delicious, and I can’t put it down. Parsons is a bit like a lesser Nick Hornby with some Helen Fielding thrown in for good measure.

A story about "The Master and Margarita" — 5 years ago

This book is driving me insane-not for lack of quality-because it is taking me forever to finish. I read at a snail’s pace and Bulgakov writes verbose and gorgeously written sentences that beg to be reread.

His characters are startling and original, like no other characters I have imagined, and his plot is well paced and tightly organized. Like all good devil characters I was charmed and creeped out all at once by Woland, and irritated to no end by self-indulgent Master.

The Master and Margarita is the sort of book for which I wish I could audit a university class, as I feel like I am missing loads just reading it on my own.

A story about "The Inferno of Dante: Bilingual Edition" — 5 years ago

Since I am going to Florence soon, I thought it imperative to read some Dante. So far, I have surprisingly enjoyed this, even if it takes three of four readings of a page to really understand what’s happening. The notes at the end of the book are really helpful and actually quite nicely written. I chose this translation because of Robert Pinsky; I’m a big fan of his.

A story about "Stupid White Men ...and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation!" — 5 years ago

Funny, shrill, and thought provoking. Didn’t believe quite a bit of what he was babbling about. Like lead in the water supply … he claims the levels are poisonous, yet no one is dying. Still, even if some of what he wrote seemed a little hysterical, I like people like Michael Moore. They keep me on my toes.

Read this in two sittings: Riveting, educational. A brilliant read.

A story about "Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintences and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career" — 5 years ago

These first person narratives about Capote have the same feel and nuance of the characters from his novels: evocative, moody, poetic, creepy, and strange.
