A story about "Continental Drift (Perennial Classics)"

Continental Drift (Perennial Classics)

by Russell Banks

I read this about 4 years ago in one of my classes. The professor was the author’s friend and decided to assign it to a few of us. Before I selected it, he asked me if I could handle it. I said sure, not thinking that any book could have an impact on me to the point where I couldn’t handle it.

I could not handle it.

It may have been at a time when I was very impressionable, but I felt like a dark cloud was following me around for a long time after I put it down. I read it over Spring Break for a project due later. It’s a dream crusher, for sure. For me, hope that I had for the future was temporarily suspended for about 6 weeks. I moped around thinking that my life is just going to be a series of failed ventures and in the end, no matter how hard I work, I will never get a good result. It’s a mighty tough read, and you have to know who you are and be confident in where you’re going in order to read it.

That’s my opinion (my teacher thought this book was great), but reading this was definitely hard on me.

A story about "You Shall Know Our Velocity"

You Shall Know Our Velocity

by Dave Eggers

I thought this book was great. I like to look for meanings I can apply to my own life from books – and while I searched and searched and felt that this didn’t have one, the story has stuck with me for quite some time. For some reason, this book makes me want to shed my possessions, and hold onto the things that matter. I was drawn to it because the first page of the book is written on the cover. It’s unique and the story is creative as he uses pictures to sometimes tell the story. The only thing that I did not like about this book is that the paperback version has added chapters, changing the plot – I thought it was fine to begin with.

A story about "The Hours (Full Screen Edition)"

The Hours (Full Screen Edition)

by Stephen Daldry

Quite a long time ago, but I found the movie version to be pretty good. It’s a good movie (although the jury is still out Nicole Kidman’s part) and a good book, but I’ll always favor Mrs. Dalloway. :/

A story about "Pride and Prejudice (Full Screen Edition)"

Pride and Prejudice (Full Screen Edition)

by Joe Wright (IV)

I personally LOVED this movie. Now I know the BBC version has a lot more to it, and some speeches were said by different characters in this movie adaptation, but the cinematography was incredible. I enjoy watching this movie so much. I thought Matthew MacFayden could be a little dry or too quick with his lines, but honestly, I don’t think I could have another Mr. Darcy after watching him play it. This movie is a sure bet for a good watch. It’s so ridiculously romantic, and I usually hate the stuff!

A story about "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay"

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

by Michael Chabon

I read this back when I was a sophomore in college. I loved it, but I felt it piqued at a certain point for my taste. After that point, I wanted to get it over with as soon as I could. But also that may be because I never liked the early 50’s period, like one the depicted in Julianne Moore’s character in The Hours.
