A story about "The Poe Shadow: A Novel"

The Poe Shadow: A Novel

by Matthew Pearl

Ooh, underwhelmed, I like that. The story was intriguing, but it was SO drawn out. I definitely did not care too much for the main character, so I didn’t feel very involved. Maybe I’ll try reading The Dante Club…

I loved how it was written, with everything intertwining. Reminds me of chiasmas, where writing mirrors itself. Maybe that’s not really the appropriate term, but everything was wrapped up… I won’t write too much else, because I don’t want to give anything away. It does contain sex, murder, and abuse…

Enjoyed it, though. Would have been funnier without the whole thing with the son…

A story about "Munich (Widescreen Edition)"

Munich (Widescreen Edition)

by Steven Spielberg

Films can communicate important messages through stories that don’t have totally graphic scenes. Images can hint at what has happened and make you understand just as well as seeing a naked body or chunks of flesh and spurting blood from a gunshot wound. However, I do think the story was very compelling. Violence begets violence. I especially appreciated the ending when you really understand that the main character was just being used as a pawn in a game that Israel decided to play.

A story about "Syriana (Widescreen Edition)"

Syriana (Widescreen Edition)

by Stephen Gaghan

First of all I need to gripe about Netflix. Their movies come in a little envelope/holder that has a synopsis of the movie on it. Why on earth was it so important to let me know that George Clooney gained 30 lbs for this part when they couldn’t even get the name of his character right? They said he plays Bob Baer. In truth, he plays Bob Barnes (who dies). The author of the book that the movie was based on was Robert Baer (who lives).
I labled the movie worth consuming because I thought it was a good subject matter, well acted, and had a great score. But I agree with others, that it was hard to follow. I couldn’t remember which characters were which… The names were never clear. I still don’t know who Matt Damon was playing… But overall, I thought it was worth it, and it made me want to read Baer’s books. I think having read them, I’d probably enjoy the movie more. I did NOT watch the torture scene, though…

I really enjoyed it. If I had any criticism, it would be that towards the end of the book, the girls seemed to speak in a way that most 5 years old would not! (Having a 5 and 6 year old myself). I like Tylers bookss, because they deal with issues that everyone faces, and yet I always have a pleasant feeling about the experience of reading her.
