Why I recommend "Wolfmother" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A couple of people told me I would really like this album, and despite initial misgivings I have to say that they were right. Part Led Zeppelin, part Spinal Tap, it’s so cheesy it should be unbearable but at the same time it ROCKS SO HARD.

They drift over the line into twaddle with their lyrics occasionally but they are at their best when they remind me of the rawness of the White Stripes, in particular on the song “Apple Tree”.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Uuuuuugh… please, put me out of my misery with a shovel to the back of the head.

A review of "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s not a bad film, some good acting, the action is a little tame and there’s a bit unnecessary CGI that is just out of place. A review I read said it was a good Western, and it’s true it owes more to that genre than traditional Asian movies. I wouldn’t recommend that anyone rush out to watch this but it’s not terrible by any means.

Covered in CGI — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Casshern is like an attempt to make a live action anime or video game, highly stylised, every shot is like a picture frame, characters expound tediously for hours, violence is exaggerated to the point of fetishism.

It lacks any sense of coherence and characters turn out to have unpredictable motives or connections which just serve to make laboured, unsubtle points about war and humanity.

We should all try to get along, but only after we’ve single-handedly destroyed a CGI robot army.

It was certainly impressive at times but whoever made this needs to learn about editing, economy of script and action, and knowing that it isn’t always necessary to drench every single shot in filters, special effects, or interminable pauses.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I just don’t get it. It was really painful to watch. The animation was subdued and never vital. Really just emotionally draining and not in a cathartic way.

A story about "Cabin Fever - Special Edition" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was talking to a co-worker about the dearth of good horror movies in the last ten or so years and how they mostly start well but don’t play out on their initial promise (cf Jeepers Creepers).

All I could come up with was Dog Soldiers which isn’t great and the werewolves look like Bungle from Rainbow (sorry, UK children’s TV reference). He recommended Cabin Fever.

Cabin Fever is OK. I enjoyed it as a daft movie in the same vein as Evil Dead. Eli Roth is obviously a big horror enthusiast as he references this and about a million other movies throughout.

There are moments of surreal humour which seem out of place and begin to dominate towards the end. Eli Roth was working with David Lynch on another project at the same time as writing and making this movie and you can see the influence.

Sadly, my main criticism of this movie is not that it isn’t gory enough, or that it’s silly but simply it wasn’t scary enough. I still think it’s entertaining and a good effort.

Why I recommend "The Life of David Gale (Full Screen Edition)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I put off seeing this for a long time but I’d heard great things about it. While it’s not entirely without its flaws, it is entertaining. When it’s intelligent, it’s very intelligent; when it’s dumb, it’s bearable.

A Powerful Story — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Almost unbearably sad movie about a drug dealer saying goodbye to his family and friends before he has to go to prison. The inevitability of it is palpable throughout as his friends seem torn between sympathy and anger.

Spike Lee can be a pretty uneven director and this film has moments of cinematic brilliance alongside parts where I didn’t really get what was being presented. Overall, it was just different enough to be engaging and familiar enough to be entertainment.

Why I recommend "Homework" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Unbelievably funky!

This is the kind of album that will change your mind about a whole genre. Definitely their best work.

Why I recommend "Arrested Development" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Arrested Development is one of those television shows that combines sharp intelligent wit with lowbrow humour. What I love is that every character is deeply flawed and pretty abhorrent sometimes but can also do the right thing when pushed.

The famous faces (Henry Winkler, Liza Minelli) aren’t afraid to look ridiculous, and played against my perception of their real life personas.

Favourite line: “don’t come too close, I think something laid eggs in my chest”.
