WORTH CONSUMING!

Thought that most of the stories had funny or at least amusing parts. Some had both funny and poignant parts. A couple of stories kind of weirded me out, and I skipped them. But most of them were well worth it.

A story about "The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived: How Characters of Fiction, Myth, Legends, Television, and Movies Have Shaped Our Society, Changed Our Behavior, and Set the Course of History" — 19 weeks ago

Not sure what to think about this. I have not even heard of most of these characters with supposedly so much “influence”. Maybe this is a generational thing.

Why I recommend "Mad Men - Season One" — 24 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This has to be my favorite show. It works on so many levels.

A story about "Colors" — 24 weeks ago

I thought that Colors was just ok. It reminded me a little of Blood In, Blood Out. But, I would recommend Blood In, Blood Out instead of Colors.

A story about "Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets" — 34 weeks ago

This was interesting, but some of the statistical and probability analysis went over my head. However, I think I got the big picture about how success is often undeserved and how experts are often wrong. This sounds pessimistic, but unfortunately I think that he’s right. Being a trader by occupation, the author bases the book on the stock market and financial industry. The book was published in 2001, and looking at the state of that field right now, it looks his words apply more than ever.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I loved this book—the anecdotes and the arguments. I thought that it was pretty balanced; with anthropomorphism given quite a lenghty discussion, etc. My favorite passages were the ones about Koko and the other signing gorillas. But this passage in particular caught my eye:

“Zoologist J. Lee Kavanau gave white-footed mice (deer mice) the opportunity to adjust light levels in their cage by pressing a lever. He found that the mice preferred dim light to bright light or darkness, and if left alone would adjust the light level accordingly. But if he turned the lights up high the mice would frequently respond by making the cage completely dark. Conversely, if he made the cage completely dark, the mice would make the light as bright as possible. He also found that if he disturbed sleeping mice, so that they came out of their cage to investigate, they would soon go back inside, but if he put them inside by hand, they would immediately come out, no matter how many times he replaced them. They cared about choice more than comfort.” (p. 121)

Why I want to consume "Moulin Rouge" — 41 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This one is the classic one. I saw the modern one with Nicole Kidman and didn’t like it. Hope the classic one is not a musical, or I don’t think I’ll be able to take any more than 10 minutes of it.
