I’m about six chapters into it, and the novel – even more so than the excerpt I remember – has a ‘waking dream’ quality to it that I’m quite taken by. It’s not making a whole lot of sense or even moving particularly fast (again, a languid, dream-like pace – or rather a pace that dreams seem to have when you’re remembering them after you wake up … something like that), that I’ll admit I am digging.

Quick synopsis (from Netflix): ’It’s 1955, and the town of Northfork, Mont., is about to disappear off the map, the victim of a newly constructed dam. Six men are charged with clearing Northfork of its last hangers-on: a couple, a man who owns an ark and a nearly comatose orphan.’

That description doesn’t begin to do the film justice though. It’s dream-like. It’s alleghorical. It’s definitely worth seeing.

But I’d rather see a Terry Gilliam film any day of the week than almost anything else by any other director.

Suddenly, fate grabs hold of his insignificant life and carries him off to Buenos Aires, to a conference on Edgar Allan Poe, the inventor of the modern detective story. There Vogelstein meets his idol, Jorge Luis Borges, and for reasons that a mere passion for literature cannot explain, he finds himself at the center of a murder investigation that involves arcane demons, the mysteries of the Kaballah, the possible destruction of the world, and the Elizabethan magus John Dee’s theory of the “Eternal Orangutan,” which, given all the time in the world, would end up writing all the known books in the cosmos. Verissimo’s small masterpiece is at once a literary tour de force and a brilliant mystery novel.’ – from the back cover blurb.

I’ve heard (or rather read online) good things.

The film of the book stars Viggo Mortensen as the Spanish soldier-turned-mercenary Captain Alatriste, a heroic figure from the country’s 17th century imperial wars. It’s directed by a Spanish director as well, Agustín Díaz Yanes, so that may be reason for hope, since that’s where the movie is set.

Don’t know about the execution.

A story about "The Devil's Rejects"

The Devil's Rejects

by Rob Zombie

Shawn says:

violent

Harley Jebens says:

It had a nice 70s sensibility to it, but about the time the sheriff started going crazy and the pimp started making with the wisecracks about the horny robots, I started to lose interest.

Harley Jebens says:

Oddly enough.

Shawn says:

it has it’s flaws, but it wasn’t the worst horror movie i’ve seen, by a longshot

Shawn says:

i liked the 70s vibe it had

den says:

so it was no ‘jeepers creepers’

Shawn says:

i liked the beginning and the end, the middle kind of wanders off

Harley Jebens says:

Not enough Banjo & Sullivan on the soundtrack, I’d say. I don’t think I heard a single refrain of “I’m home getting hammered while she’s out getting nailed.” Which is a shame, really.

Shawn says:

i liked that it was less formulaic than the majority of horror movies that are being made these days

Shawn says:

he was at least trying to do something a little different

den says:

so do you have to see ’night of 1000 corpses" to know the plot?

Shawn says:

i haven’t seen that one. i plan on renting it now

den says:

harley?

den says:

you’ve seen that one, right?

Harley Jebens says:

Yep. 1000 Corpses was more over the top, I think, if I remember correctly. Or at least had a little more humor to it. It sets up the three main characters and the sheriff’s brother. But I think all you really need to know is “crazy hillbilly cannibals.” Okay. Check. “Lots of cops.” Got it. And we’re off …

Harley Jebens says:

Sorry if I’ve spoiled House of 1,000 Corpses for anyone. I was kind of sad there was a return visit to the Pussy Liqour and Beer store in Devil’s Rejects, though.

den says:

well with a name like that it’d be a shame not to get as much mileage as possible out of it.

Harley Jebens says:

That’s what I’m thinking.

A story about "Under the Frog: A Novel"

The (mis)adventures of a Hungarian basketball team during and after World War II as Communism took hold in the country. Looks interesting …
