A story about "The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America"

I found the story of the building of the fair to be incredible—-I can’t fathom creating something so huge so quickly in the modern world, let alone more than a hundred years ago. The creepy telling of Holmes and his ‘Castle’ was eerie and tragic. A great historical read.

I don’t like the writer’s style—-she takes two pages to say what could be said in two paragraphs (or sometimes, two sentences). I understand she’s trying to put some local color into the book but the way she did it, incorporating herself into the story, annoyed me. This in itself would have been enough to keep me from reading the rest, but after reading the scene where the woman’s body was found with her toddler daughter attempting to nurse, I did not want to finish the book.

I’m especially amazed at the way the local Cleveland newspapers controlled the coroner’s office and the direction of the entire investigation.

An excellent book for anyone interested in true crime, local Cleveland history, or CSI-like techniques.

Only wish the photos were in color, but many of them pre-date color photography.

The food chapters made my ravenous!
