NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Um… wow. Ross’s coworkers told him this was a “classic scary hillbilly kidnapping movie,” and based on that description it sounded like it could be kinda fun, in a kitschy way.

Instead I spent most of it thinking how incredibly ugly Burt Reynolds is, and wondering why people think he was hot.

Oh, and also, it’s a pretty terrible movie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Weird and wonderful. I think I would hate to be friends (especially ex-girlfriends—one was in the movie and she seemed still bitter over his decades-old betrayals) with Robert Crumb, but I’m very glad he exists in the world.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Suffers a bit from the same over-reliance on speeches for exposition that made me fall asleep during the first one, and a little disjointed in storytelling, but overall this was an exciting and completely visually satisfying experience.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Wow. This might be my favorite Dustin Hoffman role ever, and it’s hard to top Tootsie for endearing. ;-)

Seriously, this is a devastatingly honest film.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I have to confess I found Goring’s letters very difficult to get through (I am generally not a Fan of historical Fiction and capitalized Nouns especially slay me!), but otherwise this is obviously a tremendous achievement. The ending (beginning) is masterful.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book is about all the reasons I love books. It’s a huge gift from one reader to others.

A story about "Sling Blade" — 2 years ago

After the opening section, which I thought was rather brilliant, this rapidly becomes overblown, badly scripted, horrifically reliant on moody music and long pauses for dramatic effect, and bizarrely anticlimactic.

A story about "The King of Masks" — 2 years ago

A bit too schmaltzy for my taste. But it did provide Ross with a new silly gesture that makes me laugh. So that’s good.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I don’t think I loved this quite as much as Sarah did, but I definitely enjoyed it and felt my heart ache for Nat and Moose. Their parents were very full characters, too. I’d have liked the book to be longer, honestly—it felt like there was a lot more room for Piper to grow, for example, and I wouldn’t have said no to finding out more about Nat and 105.

My new favorite film. And I don’t do favorites.

I’m bawling my eyes out as I type.
