WORTH CONSUMING!

Makes me (like everyone who reads it, I suspect) think I went into the wrong field.

Then again, it doesn’t take much to make me feel that way. ;-)

WORTH CONSUMING!

Out of date by now, but still a good introduction and excellent bit-by-bit bathroom reading. ;-)

I just can’t love Bukowski more.

Kind of pretty, but mostly Ehhh.

I need to be more discriminating about what I chuck on my Netflix queue from recommendations.

Francine Prose gift (and probably her curse, since she’s a writing instructor) is that she makes writing look easy.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Read concurrently with a nonfiction book on genetics and enjoyed all the more for it. Dark, delicious, sharply painful.

A story about "All About My Mother" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I haven’t yet seen an Almodovar film I haven’t liked. All About My Mother goes on a hair too long, but contains some utterly delightful and genuine performances and is as satisfying as a (very weird and well-crafted) soap opera.

Er, how did it take me 5 months to finish this? :-) Thanks for a very amusing bathroom read, Sarahmadeira!

A story about "If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things" — 2 years ago

I think I am the only person in the universe who doesn’t think this book is sheer genius. I think it might actually have been ruined for me by the rave reviews I read of it before I started it, but whatever the reason it just underwhelmed me. The pacing and the attempt at mystery didn’t work for me; the lack of names really didn’t work for me. It felt very film-like in its focus on physical gesture and its montages of small scenes, and I think it would have worked brilliantly as a movie. As a book it wasn’t my cup of tea.
