How "Eegah" changed my life — 38 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie really has it all…shocking plot twists, a steamy and tension-filled love triangle, tremendous insights into human history, stunning cinematography of the desert, a harrowing dune buggy chase, a brutal and condemning depiction of the violence of our modern world, consummate acting, impeccable hair styling, and of course a generous helping of should-have-been rock & roll hits from the great Arch Hall, Jr.

When the girl’s dad said that he knew that Eegah was a human being, it almost made me cry.

A story about "Spiderland" — 51 weeks ago

Kind of interesting. Also kind of a downer. I actually fell asleep partway through this album. Very lulling at times. These certainly make strange lullabies, that’s for sure.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I think this is my favorite Sufjan Stevens album: stripped musically, and more importantly to me the lyrics are more direct and aren’t all bogged-down with historical references I don’t know anything about.

Why I want to consume "Shells (Yale Series of Younger Poets)" — 1 year ago

I saw this guy read once, right after he won this prize (Yale Younger Poets publishing prize). It was a weekday afternoon reading in a room at the U of U library with maybe ten or fifteen in the audience, and he acted all rockstar. Awesome. And on top of that they even had free food.

I read some of this book back then, but I want to give it another try since I’ve read some pretty interesting poems from him more recently in the lit. magazines. He needs to bring a second book out.

Why I want to consume "Black Sheep Boy" — 1 year ago

The guy that works at Slowtrain (indie record store in Salt Lake) told me to check out this album. And so I will. He was playing an advance release copy of their new one at the time, which sounds good.

Why I want to consume "Marbles" — 1 year ago

I was Marillionized by a friend in high school and I have a bunch of their albums, but in recent years I have gone astray. I need to give them another chance.

A story about "The Old Man and the Sea" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I work as a substitute teacher and last week I received lesson plans to show this movie to a high school English class. I incorrectly judged that it would be a total yawner and all the students would just talk through it. However, this movie actually has a great amount of tension (will he ever get the fish?) and I was enthralled by it. More notable even is that 30 16-year-olds were also transfixed, more interested in this old movie than their friends and their ipods. Watching a guy sit in a boat and talk to himself for forty-five minutes shouldn’t be this interesting, but Spencer Tracy manages to pull it off (with the help of course of Hemingway’s great writing). The music is interesting, the cinematography is good, it feels very real. This is a great little movie.
