Well…I really liked it. Would watch again. Not half as bad as the critics led me to believe. My only qualm: the youngest boy’s instance of name-calling in the first five minutes definitely raised an eyebrow. Also, I really would have loved it if the astronaut had really been…well, I don’t want to spoil it for you! :P All around, a decent movie and entertaining to boot.

I hestitate to say that I’ve “consumed” this seeing as I couldn’t make it past the first chapter and merely flipped through the rest of it. Ugh. That’s all I can really say: ‘ugh.’ Ugh squared. Ugh cubed. Completely NOT what I expected or what I was looking for. A wishy-washy, nonsensical, ultimately-says-nothing, “self-help” book if ever there was one. The kind of “book” that just drives me up a wall, causes me to lose my faith in humanity, etc.

But don’t take my word for it. Seriously, read the first chapter and see for yourself. I could be overreacting. :P

In doing research for an article about St. Patrick for my youth group’s newsletter, I thought this book would be just what I needed—but it totally wasn’t, which has probably tainted my view of it irreversibly. It’s not a bad book, just one with a slightly misleading title. This is more Greg Tobin reflecting on St. Patrick’s wisdom, than Patrick’s actual wisdom, which I suppose if I’d thought about it before picking it up, was utterly predictable, seeing how shrouded in mystery St. Patrick’s life is. As it was, I didn’t, and although this book did prove to be helpful, it didn’t aid as I thought it would and left me in search of another book that would fulfill my needs. I would reccomend this to anyone who is interested in learning more about St. Patrick, arguably the most beloved of all saints, and his God-devoted life, but not necessarily for someone interested in reading his actual wisdom instead of small snippets of it followed by someone else’s commentary. For that, nothing really beats St. Patrick’s own “Confession”, if you can find it, his “wisdom” straight from the source.

Her reading lists are simply the best (detailed, informative, in suggested reading order) I’ve seen in any book, anywhere. This book is simply unbeatable if you’re looking for a guide to that coveted “Classical Education”. Even those who’ve already read the “basics” of classic literature can find something new in even just a perusal of this book. I applaud the author for her efforts. This is far more than just a book of random lists stuffed with oft heard titles. Her tips for analyzing what you’ve read, finding time and space to actually read, and keeping a successful reading journal are definitely helpful.
